Problem list!

Hi Guys,

After getting 3 of the 4 engine mounts replaced a month or so ago the car was great...I say WAS because now I have the following issues I could do with some help on...

1. Passenger door has stopped locking via the button and fob...the window works via both. To top it off my electric mirror does not move when engaged in reverse...

2. Reverse sensors are not working...probably links the mirror problem.

3. A grinding feeling on quarter lock coming through the steering wheel...both ways.

4. low speed vibrations coming through the pedals...up to 40mph - not sure if this could be CV related but I do not get a clicking noise on full lock. It does make the whole car shake after a while...

I have been twaling the forums and I have not come across much to help me..

Any ideas?

Re: Problem list!

I would kinda expect it to be related to changing the engine mounts.

Did any cable runs or plugs/sockets get crushed in the engine bay perhaps

Re: Problem list!

1. Check door hinge connector. They are prone to getting water in.

Grinding / vibration, check CV joints and drive shafts.

Re: Problem list!

Hi All
The reverse sensor and mirror problem could be the reversing switch cable has been knocked off during the mounting change, are the reversing lights working?
Is the grinding on the steering on the move or stationary?
The vibration I would guess is almost certainly linked to the engine mountings that were replaced, which one wasn’t replaced?

Re: Problem list!

Thanks for the replies...

Mounts: The only one i didnt change was the drivers side mount under the car. I thought it would take time to bed in (the other 3) but I have now done 1k+ miles since changing. We were as careful as possible to move the cable etc when fitting the mounts...but there is always a chance.

I will check the doors for the connectors and the reversing lights and let you know. Don't like the sound of them not being waterproof!

The grinding can be felt while stationary and in motion.

Thanks,

Re: Problem list!

Just seen you have a JTD. It will be the reverse light switch in the gearbox that has failed for the reversing sensors. I bet if you look, the reverse lights themselves will not be coming on.
Just search for reverse light switch. Lots of info on how to change it.

Re: Problem list!

Hi
Reversing light switch is an easy job it’s just behind the back of the n/s front wheel on the end of the gearbox you will need a 19mm offset ring spanner if it needs changing, check the wire is on first I think it’s the only wire down there so it should help you find the switch.
Did the steering and vibration problems start immediately after the mounting change or did they come later?

Re: Problem list!

OK, well thanks for the information guys & decks guide ...I have replaced the reverse light switch tonight an hey presto, lights/sensors/wipers live! so a big thanks for that!!!

Thats one crossed off the list

As for the vibration i think I may have an idea. The inner CV's on both side are shot to bits...loads of play...so this is next. I am told this may cure the vibrations and the clunky steering noise on quarter turn.

Tyres are not wearing unevnly so the tracking seems ok, plus only had it done 3k miles ago.

Anyone know the part numbers for the inner CV's?

Cheers.

Re: Problem list!

What do you mean by inner CV's ?

EDIT: sorry for the question, I get it now

Here're the numbers for the parts you need: http://62.195.105.49:7080/navi?MOD_C...OD=5&DRW_NUM=2

Glad you have fixed some of your problems, please report after changing ... I have the same problem as you might know.
This week I'm also changing the mounts of the exhaust to see if there's any change in vibrations.

Re: Problem list!

Ok...

Just got off the phone to my fiat dealer for the inner CV joint & boot...

(46307103) CV new = £132.78 + VAT each
(71781901) CV Recon = £56 + VAT + £30 Surcharge each
(46307029) Boot = £36.25 + VAT each

Thats around £380 inc VAT...

My local spares place sells the outer @ £59.02 each but not the inner, says the inner could be dealer only.

Why Fiat...WHY!!!

Try motor factors, or even eBay. Those prices can be beaten

Waiting for a quote back from somewhere else but one place that gave me the cost for the outer ones (£60 each...) said they were dealer only. Ebay is pants as far a Stilo JTD CV's are concerned...searched for ages (someone else don't find any now too quickly :/)

The wait is on...
