hey guys.

i dont know if this should be posted here so if its in wrong place then i apologise.

im thinking of upgrading my brakes set up, im just after any ideas what can work well??

thinking new discs ( might get vented or drilled but not sure yet , i dont really know which are better )

new pads ( was thinking either greenstuff, ebc, or maybe alcon.. has any1 got any experience?)

also thinking new calipers ( might go for upmarket brand but dont really know any other than brembo lol ... either this or some decent ones and paint them??)

if anyone can help me make a choice, i would be thankful for it.
as at the minute im just confused about the choices
also if people know good places to pick these up from :)

cheers

Right then! Brake upgrade, eh?

Well, let's start at the most expensive options... a Brembo Gran Turismo upgrade. This is a great setup which replaces the front calipers, discs, pads and adds braided hoses. This would be the ideal I think for most people but unless you're lucky like me, and manage to get ahold of a second hand set, you'll be looking at the best part of a £1000 for them

The realistic option is to upgrade the disc and pads. I think the general consensus is that grooved (not vented as you stated, all stilo front dics are vented, which is the gap between the two sides of the disc that allows hot gases to escape) discs are better than drilled. This is becuase drilled discs tend to crack due to temperature issues around the drilled holes... personally I'd avoid them.

Before I got the Brembo GT's, I had EBC discs and RedStuff pads and have to say, I found them to be quite good but I've heard that Black Diamond grooved discs mated with Black Diamond Predator pads are the nuts. (y)

cheers greggers

yeah ok :D a grand is a little pricey lmao
im lookin more on around 4 or 500

yeah while i was just out a few mates were talking about black diamond ...
its amazing how many different oppinions you can get :spin:
they went from amazing set up, all the way down to the worst they have ever used haha

redstuff, i thought they were better on faster or heavier cars, mines only a 1.6, and obviously only do the speed limit :D

well on calipers do you reckon it would just be a decent idea to paint the ones i already have ( im thinking blue now :p )
or get some new ones sprayed, as mine arnt in the best of nick really :(

well i think il have a look and shop around :)

cheers though mate you have definitely swerved me away from drilled discs after hearing the same thing from other places/people too

:yeahthat:

Painting the callipers is easy, there's a guide in the "Guides" section for this, just plain old Hammerite will do :D

Looking to upgrade myself, was looking at EBC discs and pads, but can't get Redstuff pads in my size of disc (257mm) :( Have heard mixed reviews of Greenstuff pads, but can get them for my 1.2 easily enough. Not looked into the Black Diamond pads, but the grooved discs they supply are something like £50 more for the front pear than the grooved and dimpled EBC discs on Motorsport World. Thinking of just getting plain EBC discs for the rear. Even if I went with grooved and dimpled EBC discs and Greenstuff pads, it'd be a little over £300 for it all, excluding fitting of course.

All my discs and the front pads are the originals, so have done 37k+ miles. Bit of a lip on them and there's an ever so slight squeal, so need to replace them fairly soon me thinks. No other indications of high wear though and no scoring on the discs. Been rather easy on them in the 20k miles I've driven RGZ :)

Oh, and if you think Brembo kits are expensive, look at Tarox one's :D

yeah im just thinking if its worth painting calipers.. there in a right old state at the min:eek:... i might try em though and just attack them hard!!!! :ROFLMAO:

i have been looking into these black diamond discs and a lot of good reviews but also a few bad, theres also one where he had the drilled and after a little time on track the pretty much shattered ... so not going for drilled me thinks :D

yeah im going for plain discs on the back... been looking at ferodo stuff too, little pricier than ebc, but again very mixed thoughts.

well il keep it posted what i get in the end :D

oh and yes, tarox... just a little too pricey maybe??? :ROFLMAO:

EBC grooved and dimpled..red dot fast road pads..simples [squeek] and within your budget..:)and @ greggers Galfer are a lot more expensive and better than the brembo's they even do a conversion kit to match the wheel size of the car..:)

cheers PNL, yeah i think im going for the EBC grooved and dimpled, but checking up on red dot now :D ( another brand  haha )

I'm sure that there are many thing better and more expensive... but the reality is that even the Brembo's are too expensive now for the Stilo given the cost of the car... they'd actually be about half the cost of the car!

Thing is that if you improve your brakes then you're much more likely to get hit in the rear especially by someone who has unmodded brakes.

So you'll actually be safer if you retro your brakes by making them a little worse- easily done by spraying a little oil onto the discs, you don't even have to remove the wheels

Too radical?
Perhaps it's better to THINK as if you have poor brakes, look further ahead, brake earlier and more gently so that airhead Bimbo without the Brembos behind you has an earlier wake up call and then be pleasantly amused that you can stop a lot faster than you need anyway

I now see why it says waddya mean to old above your avatar pic..:ROFLMAO:

greggers... yeah there are a lot more expensive things you can go for e.g. carbon ceramics or even carbone/silicon carbide discs and things along those lines... you can be looking at a couple of grand for the discs alone, let alone the conversion kits to be able to fit them

and :ROFLMAO:, i just want to be able to stop nice and quick :D
