Evening all.

I did a few miles of spirited country road driving today, loads of windy A-roads from the mid-Wales coast to Manchester.

From out of nowhere while braking very hard the right front wheel started making an awful noise. Like a rhythmic/pulsing knocking grinding noise - hard to explain on here, but was going in time with the wheel and as I slowed down it became less of a bump and more of a grind. The steering had an effect on the noise, as did the brakes - seemed worse with brakes on, but still there while off.

I slowed right down to try and fathom where it was coming from and then it slowly went away as whatever it was corrected itself.
I'm obviously concerned as it really didn't sound good at all, however everything is now functioning normally...?

What could be causing this?

kind of similar to this, but has since gone away..., if you follow the links to 2/3 and 3/3 on this video it shows a loose part... can this fit in with my problem?

Mate,

By all sympoms, the ABS was engaged!
If the road was wet and you brake hard, i am sure that it was ABS.
I had similar expirience, and it was terrifying.
As you said, it stopped, and now it's all O.K.(y)

Regards,

Ivan

definitely not ABS mate - was dry, good conditions, and the noise carried on without my foot on the brakes for a hundred yards or so..

Something definitely was wrong, just like the video I posted.

there's nothing like that part on a stilo.. if that was your noise i'd guess your pad might be messed up (or disk but noise going away would indicate it is not a disk problem).. it could just be that you were going over a 'hard' bit in the pad (yep there nuggets of harder bits imbedded in pads) or you might've had a small stone get in between a pad and disk. You should lift up that end of the car take the wheel off and inspect everything (a stone would leave a big groove in the disk) also see if there is enough pad left and check it is fixed in place nicely (there are two small metal springs on each pad top and bottom to stop it from squealing.. if these fail a pad can chuck about causing your symptoms).. Apart for that .. tell us what you discover once you had a good nose about (if it's a stone you need to get it out ASUP)

Yes, especiallly with a spirited drive on a fairly loose surface then it's highly likely you have picked up a small stone jammed between the pad and the disc. Drive backwards a bit and I've had them pop out just as easily

I had a similar problem recently i was driving hard and fast and i think i over heated the brakes and they started making a droning noise and failed to work very well until they cooled down. I think i have a warped disc and the heat made it swell making the noise more apparent. New discs and pads been on the agenda for a while. It was right after it passed the mot with no advisorys. I was looking at the readout on the brakes and it said front wheels around 4000 and reaar wheels mid 2000's i think this was the strength of the brakes. Any1 know if thats a good reading.

Ive decided i want brembo standard pads can any1 recommend where i could get them from or possibly feroda i think there the same thing.

Also i need some discs can you recommend some discs i was initially gonna get some drilled and slotted discs but i read that they are more likely to break unless they are moulded with the holes and that they are more for looks than anything else. Also im on a tight budget so..
