Airbag Failure. Stop Engine

Has anyone else experienced this problem. I have had whole airbag unit replaced and one month later it happened again. My Stilo is a 1.2 3door Active and was only 3 months old when this problem surfaced.

Interested to know if anyone else is experiencing the same problem.

Hi

The Fiat airbags are multiple and complex as it doesnt just pop the bags when you have a bump. but it calc the speed, weight of person etc before deploying to ensure the safes und usefull deployment method. with mine, it was the weight sensor within the passengers seat that failed. this was intermittent, but showed up on the diagnostics at my local garage. so it may not be easy for some one to say oh its this......

Good luck, and if in doubt, try another Fiat garage! your warranty is with any garage, not just the one you bought it from.

Cheers Kev,

Have done some more investigation in to these airbags. It is a Siemens VDO Airbag system - fitted only to the Stilo and the Ford Fiesta. Get the feeling that it is too clever for its own good. Innovation and new ideas are all well and good - might be better to get them working before implementing them.

Also noticed that a Rome based car rental agency have stopped giving customers Stilo's from their fleer because of problems (airbag failure included).

Meantime I have my Stilo back - "an intermittent failure of a weight sensor within the passenger seat" - no less!! Sound familiar. If this is a problem component surely Fiat should be contacting dealers to check out the cars. It is a safety issue after all.

How many times have you had this problem?

Hello there. I had also experienced the exact same problem. The warning light came on as I was driving through heavy rain. I do not know if it is a coincidence. Surelly it kept poiping on and off for quite a whilw untill I took it to my local dealer. They fixed it and ytold that it had to do with the wiring underneath the drivers seaty. Weight sensor sounds to me a more logical explanation. Nevermind. The point is that the problem has not appeared since.

Nothing more to add.

I had same problem and it was the weight sensor within the passengers seat that failed. Now it works.

Hi People,

I'm a young Maltese Stilo owner and I've been experiencing the same problem that most of you are complaining about for about 4 months now. I've changed the weight sensor 3 times and this is a shame. You can never expect such things from a new car. I hope that something will be done about this problem because owners have paid quite a lot of money for this car and we can't except this.

Enjoy yourselves experiencing the Magificient Stilo

All the sensors for the airbags are under the seat if you often move the seat probably a cable might stack and loose the connection thats not a problem you still can move your car but without the airbags armed the diagnostics disable the airbags as soon as a problem found.

Airbag Warning Light

I have a 3dr fiat stilo active sound and recently the airbag warning light is starting to appear also with the message Aibag Failure Stop enigne at first this was intermittent but i have noticed it appears when a passenger is sitting on the passenger seat then after about 5 min into the journey it would disappear the warning now in the last few days the warning is happen constantly even when there is no passenger is there a known problem with airbag sensors on the passener Seat

I had the same problem when I first got my car.

There is a sensor in the passenger seat to detect when someone is sat in it to save on repair costs in an accident if you are carrying no passengers.

Initially, they said that the sensitivity was to high, so they adjusted it. The problem came back soon after so they replaced it for me. The problems not been back since.

I have had a couple of problems with this area. firstly it could be a loose connection , the wiring etc comes up from the floor under the seat and can get caught there are a lot of sensors and wiring under the seats. Or it is simply a fault with the airbag, I had mine replaced 3 months ago and fine ever since then. What-ever the reason take it to the dealer..

airbag light

my stilo has electric seats and every time i move them forward(it is a 3 door), it hits the air bag wires and causes an airbag failure. i have been in to rectify this 5 times now and he same thing keeps happening. the beeping noise is so annoying and i am fed up wasting my time having it repaired. has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do about it?[xx(]

If the dealers DET is doing his job right the repairs to the multiplugs should be good, does the fault occur after you have moved the front seats because the plugs fitted under the seats on the plastic carrier are very weak but there is a fix in the dealer service news

On the new stilo's the OCS sensor under the passenger seat has now been removed as it keep causing problems. The main Fault is the connections under the seats( As Ned States ) But as fiat connectors are crap, this problem will keep occuring, but no modification to wiring can be done as it is illegal, only cable ties can be used to hold the plug together which really does not work, believe me.

i had a major problem with this also had to go get it checked like 6 times. they even changed the WHOLE WIRING Of the car and still it had a problem so i decided to take matters in my own hands. basically the tie raps due work but you need to tie rap the main cable to the cradle under the seat which hold the wiring you know that plastic loopy things that grabs the bulk wiring and then also tie rap the orange plug also so far i only had it occur twice in one year and i just pulled the bulk wire back and it was fine (didnt want to over tighten the tie rap just in case i crimped a wire but did its job by doing a good grab)

If Its Under the seat the problem you can check. By Turning Igntion Off, undo cradle under seat and disconnect & re-connect orange plug a few times. Then start car and if airbag light goes out then its that connection.Personally i think these wires should have better protection anyway, and better connecters.

An update. yes i have had the car back to the garage each time. This time they tried somthing new, A new Air-bag in the steering wheel!! Seems OK so far but it has only been a week. I will keep you all posted.[:X]

It will be a poor multiplug connection somewhere but your car has approx 8 airbags it will need a examiner read out to i.d. the cause, the favourite ones are the plugs under the seats (as previously mentioned) but dont go fiddling with them just get the dealer to rectify.
