Re: Finally the rattle is gone! JTD owners read here

Just as an idea of why i did this...apart from the rattling and the movement backwards and forwards in the engine I also was experiancing major engine wobble (side to side) at speeds over 60mph. While good for my MPG it was very fustrating travelling around at these speeds.

IMO the underside ones need checking more than the internal Mounts. On mine it was the nearside (they are both the same type) Mount that was metal on metal. When I removed one of the mounts to check how much play was in the engine it could be moved very easily. This change cured the forwards and backwards clunking under excelleration.

The Nearside mount above the gearbox was probably still good enough to keep but with the upgraded part available i took the chance to replace.

The offside mount (below the coolant container) was in poor condition. the seals had perished which prompted the replacement. This has stopped the movement from side to side.

Really wish I had taken pictures now!

Hope this helps anyway.

Part no's Are:

O/S Stabilising (Underneath) - 46781893 - £26.24 + VAT from Fiat
N/S - 51711216 - £66.78 + VAT from Fiat
O/S - 51776846 - £36.02 + VAT from Fiat

Great help there NotAgain thanks

Quick question - could you check the price of the O/S mount for me, as I have part 51776846 as ~£80+VAT from my local FIAT dealer (depreciated part code 46847852 comes up at £57.20 on my old ePer v16 for the same part?). My N/S mount - which I'm collecting tomorrow - was £43.32+VAT from my local dealer. Cheers!!

Re: Finally the rattle is gone! JTD owners read here

just rang three local dealers - the part 51711216 £47.50 inc Vat at all three.

Waiting on them to get back to me in regards to timescales. The clunk noise a previous poster mentioned is the same on mine so will get all of them replaced over time as funds allow, as i'd imagine movement from the others will only shorten the life of the newly replaced one.

I had the rear stabiliser mounts changed a few weeks ago, and it stopped the banging noise I got when I changed gear or accelerated/braked. The evil rattle noise - that can be heard so loudly from inside - is definately coming from the gearbox mount as you described, which I'm hoping to do this next week or so. I held a screwdriver under pressure between the mount's inside surfaces which immediately stopped the rattle whilst it was in place, so I've now got a bit of tyre from a mobility scooter wedged in there which is mostly stopping the rattle, but I'll get it changed over this next week or so - when the part arrives in the country! (thanks Fiat)

Re: Finally the rattle is gone! JTD owners read here

My local Fiat dealer in Welling (london) is the price I have given. The Garage Name is Ancaster Fiat.

An update on My mounts. The rattling has completely stopped and the engine has stopped moving at high speeds but they need to bed in now and are giving me a small amount of vibration below 30mph but this should stop in a few hundred miles *i have been advised)

Glad the post helps.

Re: Finally the rattle is gone! JTD owners read here

Just an update. I have finally managed to replace the gearbox mount over the weekend. I'm officially driving a different car now. The rattle from the cabin and the vibrations are completely dissapeared.

Another info has come to my attention that i would like to share. As i went to the service to replace the gearbox mount that I've purchased earlier for my JTD, the servicer tells me that the gearbox mount from the 1.8L engine would also fit the JTD engine with even better results (in reducing the vibrations) than the original JTD gearbox mount.

The reason the part from 1.8L engine is better in reducing noise and vibration in the cabin is that rubber parts on it are softer than the ones on the JTD part. This actually makes sence... because the JTD is heavier than the 1.8, therefore needed the harder rubber to carry the weight.

Not sure, but I think that the gearbox mount for the 1.8L is also cheaper than the one for JTD.

That's exactly what the man who maintains my jtd has told me!
I've seen that 1.8 stilo mount and was a bit suspicious, but now i am sure that it's true!

I´ve got changed my old gearbox mounting by one of the new ones (51711216) and I have a new car. It seems I´m driving an A3

My garage charged me 123 €, included VAT (46.71 plus VAT and 2 hours of labour). I preferred let them to do the job, because they had to take out the battery box, and you have to deal with the D24 connector. The first time we connected the battery, we waited about 10 minutes to let the body computer check all the parameters. At first, the boot door didn´t open, but after opening and close the car twice using the key fob, the problem disappeared. The other problem was that my CD changer didn´t want to work, but after 20 minutes it began to work without problem. If you get some kind of problems by loosening and taking out the battery, they have the Examiner to solve it....

Now being serious, the steering wheel doesn´t rattle at idle (before fixing that, you could get your hands asleep by holding the steering wheel for several minutes). And I haven´t that rubber noise at idle coming from back of the steering wheel (left hand drive.... ). The remaining engine mountings got them changed when I bought the car, the only mounting left was gearbox one...

So problem fixed....

got the new mount fitted today... as others have said it makes a huge difference. I'm absolutely delighted with the car, seems so much more sold.. less vibrations and the clunking under acceleration/decceleration has gone too! A year and a half later I get the car how I want it. Very pleased indeed

Thats great news. Thanks for keeping everyone up to date fella.

So when i take the Stilo to have the new cambelt/waterpump, if i simply ask them to replace the gearbox mount at the same time, should that do the job, or would it be adviseable to get the engine mountings changed too?

Just checking coz the cambelt & service is looking near to £700 as it is so i don't really wanna spend anymore than is absolutely essential on other work at the moment! Especially as the suspension sounds like it's dying a grim death aswell

Re: Finally the rattle is gone! JTD owners read here

forgot to add, just the one mount under the battery has fixed the problem - £47 inc VAT from fiat. Took a couple of weeks to order, get the part and get it fitted cash in hand elsewhere... should be cheap

Re: Finally the rattle is gone! JTD owners read here

Guys I had exactly the same problem with my Stilo 1.9 JTD, all car was shaking and rattling. I read the whole thread word by word, bought the new replacement gearbox mount and changed it myself in front of my house. I also made a guide for all FIAT Forum members, please read it here and feel free to ask me questions or to make a comment.

Let's hope the rattle problem is solved and explained once and for all

I've been doing loads of searching on this, and other forums over the past year about an annoying (and embarrassing) rattle on my Stilo.

Basically, on a cold morning there is a nasty sounding metallic rattle coming from under the bonnet on the passengers side. The rattle is pretty constant in rhythm and seems to fade around 2krpm and dissapears above that. The rattle goes completely once the engine has warmed up, and seems to be related to the outside temperature, as on a cold day it rattles like crazy then slowly fades away. This is for about 25 mins of driving on a 5degrees or below day, 10 mins for about 15 degrees and the problem is not there at all on a summers day at about 25degrees and above.
Stranglely on a very cold day it can warm up, and dissappear while driving around town, then after driving at steady revs on a motorway for hours I come to a junction and the engine is put in neutral and annoyingly the rattle (although quiet) reappears!

As i'm sure you can guess, this is driving me crazy.

I've almost come to the conclusion it's something to do with the Crank/Aux Pulley being worn, however all the posts I've read mention the rattle for this should be coming from the drivers side of the bonnet, not the passengers, where mine seems to come from.

There really seems to be some clued up bods on here, so if you could please please take the time to give your opinions as to what is wrong with my very sick car i'd be very grateful indeed.

Thanks

Mike
Hi Mike, have just bought mine (JTD Multiwagon),and it did the same.Rattled like a pig when cold.Cause was a plastic panel loose underneath..like yours it shut up when warm.Secured it and now it doesnt sound like a Russian tractor when cold!.

Like my Marea with a loose heatshield on both the engine and the cat...Fiats just need a little love and fettling.

Re: Finally the rattle is gone! JTD owners read here

Wow, what a difference. Finally got my gearbox mounting replaced and now nothing vibrates or rattles on tickover. A large pothole finally finished my original one off, but I've had a rattle when cold & vibration on tickover for the last year, it just gradually gets worse and you dont tend to notice until you drive another modern diesel. Just got to stop the clutch pedal squeaking and creaking and all will be quiet.
