Bit of advice on having what seems like 1mm side to side play on off side front wheel, thinking it would be as simple as a track rod end
I have replaced track rod end but still have small amount of horizontal play when I jack car up and pull and tug the front wheel, vertical play is fine and have no noticable knocks or strange steering when driven,,can I rule out wheel bearings being worn, will be weekend when I can get someone to hold steering wheel firm and check the knock when I tug and pull wheel is still there and it is not just movement up through steering system, nearside is fine
If the play is still there when I get someone to hold steering wheel firm what should I be looking for at fault having already put a new track rod end on and with a mot due next month would it squeek through with an advisory ??
is a 1.9jtd mw with 88k miles on it.

It is probably normal. If you look at the lower wishbone bushes, you will probably see them compressing/ expanding as you move the wheel. Usually with suspension problems you get a knocking noise when there is a problem, and wheel bearings going (which happens on stilos) should produce a rumble noise at speed.

I was starting to get the same fault on mine and although it passed its MOT I wasn't happy and the steering rack was the prime suspect..so in the end I had really had enough of things starting to go wrong..bad fuel economy and downward spiraling depreciation and massive modified insurance cover..so I chopped it in for the panda ..now no dings beeps and aggro ..why even if the cam belt should snap on my little 1.2 fire it wont naff the engine up..definately the way forward..(y)

Thanks much for info
Thinks now that as you said john55 the lower wishbone is the offending item and like you PNL was starting to think it was going to be the steering rack but having taken the wheel off again today and given the track rod itself a good heaveho pull and jiggle there was no play there , when I got to looking at the wishbone I could see a very slight play in the front bush part of the wishbone which seems a little more once I get the 17" wheel back on, and for now can ease my worry of the steering rack and see if I can fit a new wishbone by mot time if the weather is good so I can get out and bash the knuckles so better start getting the penetrating oil out, but not too worried as it by no means excessive play there.

Thought I would update this in case anyone else runs into the same .
Replaced the wishbone this morning for £35 for the part and no bruised knuckles and all is now sorted and no more play in the front wheel not a difficult job although did need a fork tyre ball joint seperator and found the torque numbers for the bolts by doing a little search on here.
