Removing the cat converter

Hi there,
I want to remove the cat converter but there are two lambda's on it. What should I do?

Re: Removing the cat converter

Dont remove it as the cat is an integral part of the engine management system. You will fail an MOT without it and the car wont run very well if it sees (through the lambdas ) the cat is not working.

Some people (I have not seen it on this forum) have tried to emulate the second Lambda which is what you have to do if you want to take it out, to fool the engine ECU into thinking it is still there and working.

Probably easier to just buy a bigger diameter cat if you want to improve exhaust performance and still be road legal.

Yes, you're right. I did removed it on my ex-punto MK1 but the lambda was situated before the cat there and it did no damage to the system then, as it didn't take info from the cat.

Hmmmm.. MOT in Bulgaria ? If it's anything like Greece, that won't matter. I took a freind's car to the government testing station in Corfu year before last. The guy checked the side lights were working then drove the car about 20 meters and put his foot on the brake, the car stopped so that was it. New MOT for 2 years. The car was an old Fiat Duna so didn't have a cat. but watching other newer cars being done, none were emissions tested.

Dave.

Euro 2 emission standard cars have 1 lambda, so you can remove the cat no problems. Euro 3 or Euro 4 (like the Stilo) have a second lambda after the cat.

The engine ECU is very biased towards meeting the emission standards at all cost. If you just remove it, you will probably get very little power as the ECU is trying to maintain low emissions at the expense of performance.

Re: Removing the cat converter

davren because the car didnt come with a cat thats why you didnt have a problem. They are pretty strict now with mot here in greece with the new cars (meaning past 10 years). Before you had to go to a government mot station to get it checked now they passed it on the private sector. YOu used to be able to slip 20-30 euros to bribe the government guys but at the private sector they dont risk it. Just took my stilo about 4 months ago. 15 minutes with a day before phone call to make an appointment, and 50 euros short i was set for 2 years. They did a full testing on mine with brake test, suspension test, exhaust, the works.

Re: Removing the cat converter

Yiassou Stilatos,

It may be like that on the mainland, but I think the islands decide for themselves which laws to obey. When I went to Kerkyra for last summer, I was told they had adopted the no smoking laws. What it actualy meant was they'd put 'No Smoking' signs everywhere but there were still ashtrays on all the tables.
