Turbo Problems (overboost valve dirty?)

hi there well i hve a stilo 1.9 jtd i took it to the dealer as i was having a problem with turbo .i could drive it around at normal speeds but soon as i drive it hard the tubo just shut off if i sloww down for a minute or so the turbo comes back 2 me but same happens when i accelerate hard again it seems 2 do it soon as it goes into 4th gear.the dealer says the turbo has gone it comes up as overboosting but after reading posts on hear im wondering if overboost valve .thic car has been completely submursed in water due 2 floods every thing else is fine just this problem do i change turbo or overboost please some1 save £750 as that wat dealers price 4 turbo

re: Turbo Problems (overboost valve dirty?)

Hi, and welcome to the forum. Are you getting any hissing at all when you accelerate?

If so it may be the intercooler hose split, a fairly common and intermittent fault. Check the pipes to the overboost valve to see that they are ok and if possioble re-position the overboost valve higher up.

Check also the MAF sensor, give that a clean but it sounds like your dealer is going for gold and wants to rip you off.

re: Turbo Problems (overboost valve dirty?)

Yes; these are absolutely classic symptoms of overboost valve problem.

As Bozzy says check all the tubing (to/from the overboost valve), clean it and as a last resort change it.

hi thanks lads there is a noise but i have checked the intercooler pipes as i had that problem on a punto im goner go 4 the over boost valve as cheeper option is it easy 2 change also does any 1 no a good breakers as im realy struggling 2 gt parts and ill need a new visa at fiat prices

re: Turbo Problems (overboost valve dirty?)

When my car got stuck in the floods last year (thanks to a white van man :bang:).

it had to be started by a rescue driver because it was just the battery that got swamped, luckily everything else worked.

i found that for about 30 miles after that i was driving around with no turbo assistance and an awful lot of smoke. as it was 8pm'ish and a sunday, there would be no local garages open so i had to make the journey home.

after about the 30 miles the car seemed to sort its self out and then suddenly picked up and went back to normal and the return to dealer light stopped. :D

re: Turbo Problems (overboost valve dirty?)

Isnt there a recommendation to relocate the overboost valve from low down in the engine bay, to the battery tray to reduce its vulnerability to water damage? Am sure i read it somewhere. If the OPs car has the valve in the original place, this could be the prob maybe?

re: Turbo Problems (overboost valve dirty?)

Where is the filter in an overboost valve? I didn't know it had one.

Hi all,

Engine management light on, No power. Turbo in not cutting in so i take it my egr valve has stuck.

Is it easy enough to get at and where is it please. Any other pointers have checked the pipes and cant feel any splits or pipes off.

It was replaced last year in july and the car is doing the same now so its my first suspect. Any plugs i can pull out the check or anything like that.

Thanks

Agree with Argo -unlikely to be the EGR, MAF possible and overboost valve is more likely..... try disconnecting the battery and walking away for 15mins. Re-connect and see if it's behaving. No guarantees, but I've seen it work ;)

Otherwise a diagnostic is likely to find your answer :(

Well i disconected the battery in the vain hope and not made a blind bit of difference.

Now i was going to order a egr but instead will order a overboost valve, Do you think its wise to get one. I cant see this maff thingy doing this much to the performance so am going to hedge my bets unless you all think its a silly thing to buy. Can i only get the valve from fiat and not a parts factor.

Should i also be getting error codes as well or just the engine light and engine fault message.

And what a cack handed air-box/intercooler system on these Jtds as well.

Oh ps; Has any one got a spare battery cover,:mad:mine broke:mad::eek: that they might want to sell please.

Bummer - the battery thing does work on occasion :(

IMHO the best thing you can do is dig deep (actually not that bad) and get it on the diagnsotics at a dealer or someone with Bosch diagnostics, will give you a better idea of what you need to buy. It could be the overboost valve, it could be the MAF or it could be the turbo...... shi*ty position to be in but better spend the money finding out what's wrong than spending cash willy nilly.

There will be error codes - lots of 'em I'd expect

Yup - the airbox is bloody nightmare, GSR kit more elegant but not everyones cup of tea.

To be honest the parts from Fiat aren't going to break the bank - from shop4parts even less so ;)

Well thanks Guys, your diagnois was spot on.

Took it too Huttons at Weston super mare this morning around 8.30 this morning and was told have a seat, They looked at it on their computer thingy and confirmed the Overboost valve was at fault.

Huttons then gave me a 8.30am appointment for friday this week and their service has been superb. And i was on my way home by 9.30 am. :D:D

Oh and can anyone tell me if moving the Overboost valve upto the battery box was done by fiat as when i said about it today the garage didnt know anything about it.

Was thinking it might be a good idea to have it moved whilst they are doing it????

There was a service bulletin about this released to the dealers.

Some of the better dealers did it but many others never bothered (and certainly aren't likely to if the car's now out of warranty)

I'd get it done (y)

It wasnt a service news, it was more word of mouth recommendation discussed on courses, saying that mine hasnt been moved, (i just cant be bothered) and mines been as good as gold.
