Well yes, the problem is certainly on the can network. A node playing up will cause problems and the network to lose communications with one another which is what you're seeing.

Interesting thing is that the nodes need to be told to go to sleep by the body computer and if they don't get the message they can stay live and drain the battery, another of your symptoms

Have a look at this link

http://www.aa1car.com/library/can_systems.htm

It sounds as if your Fiat garage either do not have the diagnostics capability or training to diagnose CAN faults. I'd seek a better garage or vehicle electronics specialist

Another point to note is that the CAN lines go to the radio so modifications there can easily mess things up. Hint;)

Some good news! ive found the gremlin! just need a bit of info on identifying it!

its in the boot inside the driverside cubby hole connected to the parking sensors, i think, everything works with it disconnected! no probs or warnings! only fault i can see is the flashing mileage :( and parking sensor failure,

but deffo good progress! anyone know what this is then?? lik i said, in the boot drivers side cubby hole where the fuel cap release string comes from, it has 2 connectors into it

I can't quite make out the part number on it, but if it's 46782013, then it is the parking sensor ECU.

Dave.

yup with it disconnected everythings good, like i said barring the flashing mileage and parking sensor fault, ive tested it 3 times connected then disconnected and it plays up every time its connected,

thing is now where do i get one :( as i guess from fiat they gonna be taking more cash off me!

and a battery drainage test of .31 of an amp is good,

So did you find it by the current it was drawing then Ben (guess it would be warm too :chin:)

I assume all your other issues have disappeared too - cracking result if they have (y)

yup doors lock/unlock clocks work fine everything works spot on barring parking sensor fault (understandable it being disconnected) and flashing mileage display,

so just need to source a parking sensor ecu now, as the prices ive seen at fiat are £105 :(

but yup if this does turn out to be this, i will keep the car, but it already knows its on thin ice! :p

Wa Hay! So it was the parking sensor node. Brill!

Can't blame the whole car for an errant parking sensor node. Who needs parking sensors anyway? It's not a truck - even though it has a big backside:)

Can't for the life of me think why Fiat garage couldn't diagnose that

my thoughts exactly decks! im hoping that it is just the parking sensor black box, get it all sorted again!, as its in bitts at the mo, bits of dash, trim body work all over the place!

does it look like its the black box to you?? its all its seems to be pointing towards

Yes that'll be the parking sensor node. All on the CAN line, it'll mess up all the communications between it and all the other nodes. If it's not told to go to sleep then it'll just keep going causing battery drain.

last update,

spent all day today getting the car back together, new parking ecu fitted cost 133.50 :(

New intermediate pipe on the exhaust
Went over all the wirering cleaning connections and retapeing them all up,
new oil /oil filter, general once over the full car,

(y) up, all looking good, since re-aligning the rear sub frame the tracking in relation to the steering is out, so its off for tracking tomorrow, then just a case of sorting the flashing mileage!

so cheers to everyone for the help over the last three weeks, much appreciated!

the car would of been long gone by now if it wasnt for the advice!

Now time to chill out and order a takeaway!

Glad it all worked out in the end, its been a real drama watching your problem unfold. Theres loads of info in this thread aswell so hopefully it will help someone else in the future.

WELL DONE!!!:worship:

hi steely ive just purchased a fiat stilo 1.616v dynamic with similar problem, all the lights on the clock are constantly on (engine management light, abs, handbrake, a triangle light and a wheel) also the fuel gauge and temp gauge don't work, Ive tried disconnecting the parking sensor ecu like the problem with yours but still same. Once disconnecting the parking sensor ecu do i need to reset any?
