Well yes, the problem is certainly on the can network. A node playing up will cause problems and the network to lose communications with one another which is what you're seeing.
Interesting thing is that the nodes need to be told to go to sleep by the body computer and if they don't get the message they can stay live and drain the battery, another of your symptoms

It sounds as if your Fiat garage either do not have the diagnostics capability or training to diagnose CAN faults. I'd seek a better garage or vehicle electronics specialist
