Technical 1.9 jtd 115 - poor mpg & black smoke (EGR or MAF?)

Hi all,
well new maf is being collected tomorrow from Manchester ( it was the guy off ebay, link davren posted)
What a bargain 39.95 for a bosch one.
But what i did do today was take out my maf at work and gave it an ultrasonic bath in acetone and guess what it has cured it !! the trouble with cleaning a maf is you cannot really clean it thoroughly as the "wire" is hidden from view. So people of fiat forum if you want your old spare mafs cleaned let me know!!
I am pretty sure it is not coincidence as i had a good look at it under a microscope and could clearly see some "soot" type deposits and afterwards they were gone:D. We are talking tiny deposits almost discolouration on the surface not huge lumps but i guess it is enough to throw a wobbly?
But better to be sure hence a new maf going on.

Kind regards

Hi all,
Well new maf in and we can call it job jobbed.
I think i may change the boost valve just so i know there is a new one in there.
I have had p0235( i think) once or twice so will change as a matter of course me thinks

Cheers all

Re: How to Block the EGR valve

Here you go:

egr_gasket.jpg

To block:
  • Loosen all 4 allen head bolts which hold the corrugated pipe in place (6mm allen key).
  • Completely remove the 2 bolts on the far flange (shown loose)
  • Carefully remove the gasket (shown on right)
  • Now using the original gasket as a template, make a new gasket using say the lid of a sardine tin (as I have, which is shown on the left)
  • Reassemble the flange with the new 'blocking' gasket.
  • Finally tighten all 4 bolts.

If all of this make no difference to how the engine runs (possibly it might run a little less smooth) then you can assume there's nothing wrong with your EGR system. This means you can put the original gasket back :)

Is the engine runs a lot better then you've just proven your EGR valve is defective. This gives you four options:
  1. Do nothing - strictly speaking illegal :(
  2. Take if off completely and clean it
  3. Fit a reconditioned EGR
  4. Fit a new one
Mine was working fine and the soot you can see one on that gasket, after I removed it, is what you can expect after just one day.

Perfect, no more waiting around, it must be done today (y)

So let me join in :)

I have declogged my EGR valva, and tried it on outside Power Supply it works, reassembled and it seems to work, BUT...

Before cleaning EGR valve my Stilo had rough driving, engine accelerates then stops then accelerates then stops rapidly. Now i dont have that problem but,

-Black smoke on throtle
-Pooooorrr acceleration

As i am reading here i think you will say intercooler hose right?

Could be that intake manifold is simply clogged? Should i remove it and wash it? And by the way PETROL simple gasoline is excelent cleaner for carbon. Just go buy some gasoline and soke your part in it, it will clean it to the metal, PERFECT. Just thought of givin a suggestion, thanks :)

Re: Where is the maf sensor on JTD

Split pipe on intercooler side normally generates a lot of black smoke plus you should hear it.

This subject has been discussed extensively - have you used the Search tool ?

Sorry to barge in,but what exactly is the sound of a split pipe? Thanks
