re: 1.9 jtd 115 - poor mpg & black smoke (EGR stuck?)

Whan is possible reason of the dirty air? Broken turbo? How to check that?
The whole point of the air filter is to keep dirt out of the engine so if any pipe is split on the induction side then this will allow unfiltered (dirty air) into the engine. If the air filter box was never closed properly then this also means that unfiltered air may have been getting into the engine.

I'm sure your engine will survive if this has happened but it can very dangerous when going through floods because then you suck in water

re: 1.9 jtd 115 - poor mpg & black smoke (EGR stuck?)

As Argo has said, that filter box is not closed properly. The orange you can see is the edge of filter element.
I would think this would effect the performance of the car as technically you have an air leak in the system with that gap.

re: 1.9 jtd 115 - poor mpg & black smoke (EGR stuck?)

Hi!
I was in Fiat Service today and they blocked EGR valve. What I can say now - my stilo is flying. There is no smoke and it accelerates like hourse!
Within 2 weeks I will observe fuel consumption and let you know about result.

Air filter box is mounted properly. That orange it's a silicon ring.
Oil leaks are from turbo :/
They told it's normal or I shoud change turbo for new one (1k euro).

The EGR valve must have been blocked open.

Why don't you get a new (or reconditioned) one fitted (few posts back you were all keen to buy one )

A working EGR valve will likely provide slightly improved consumption and, in my experience, the engine runs smoother at low speeds.

If you're turbo is very oily (most are anyway) then it's a hell of lot cheaper to just clean it than fit another one :) ;)

re: 1.9 jtd 115 - poor mpg & black smoke (EGR stuck?)

The EGR valve must have been blocked open.

Strange as they (Fiat Service) put a piece of metal sheet between silber pipe and the valve.

I think that within a week or two I will change EGR for new one.

About turbo cleaning? Is it difficult and time costly?

How to Block the EGR valve

Here you go:

egr_gasket.jpg

To block:
  • Loosen all 4 allen head bolts which hold the corrugated pipe in place (6mm allen key).
  • Completely remove the 2 bolts on the far flange (shown loose)
  • Carefully remove the gasket (shown on right)
  • Now using the original gasket as a template, make a new gasket using say the lid of a sardine tin (as I have, which is shown on the left)
  • Reassemble the flange with the new 'blocking' gasket.
  • Finally tighten all 4 bolts.

If all of this make no difference to how the engine runs (possibly it might run a little less smooth) then you can assume there's nothing wrong with your EGR system. This means you can put the original gasket back :)

Is the engine runs a lot better then you've just proven your EGR valve is defective. This gives you four options:
  1. Do nothing - strictly speaking illegal :(
  2. Take if off completely and clean it
  3. Fit a reconditioned EGR
  4. Fit a new one
Mine was working fine and the soot you can see one on that gasket, after I removed it, is what you can expect after just one day.

Where is the maf sensor on JTD

Does anyone know where the MAF sensor is on the JTD. My dads MW is suffering from loss of power and reckon it may be due to this. I want to unplag it to see if the car runs properly! Please help.:confused:

Re: Where is the maf sensor on JTD

mines down between radiator and engine, bolted onto airbox if you can follow back from turbo it should be inbetween turbo and aibox.the plug may have a clip you have to pull out before you can unplug it.

Re: Where is the maf sensor on JTD

More likely a split intercooler pipe though. The car will seem a little down on power with the MAF unplugged, but should otherwise run OK.

re: 1.9 jtd 115 - poor mpg & black smoke (EGR or MAF?)

Hi!
Last Friday I finally changed EGR valve and now it seems my engine works ok. Tomorrow I will try my time on 4th from 64~129 as Argo told in another topic and let you know.

Re: Where is the maf sensor on JTD

It only does looses power for a while then the power kicks back in! Thats why I am duessig its the maf! Would a split pipe cause these kind of symtoms?

Split pipe on intercooler side normally generates a lot of black smoke plus you should hear it.

This subject has been discussed extensively - have you used the Search tool ?

Re: Where is the maf sensor on JTD

yeh used the search tool but it justs ends up confusing me more cos there is many suggestions that are all rendering the same symtoms. I just want to go for the easiest solution first which I think the maf probably is.:bang::bang::bang:

Re: Where is the maf sensor on JTD

did you find it? I can take a picture of mine tomorrow.

Hey guys, i have posted this before about my car and it seems that i too have been having the same problems as slavomir ..

1) below turbo 2000rpm the car has NO acceloration ... in say 4th gear cruising at 2000RPM, put your foot down and you get absolutely no power and a lot of smoke out the back. Same goes in 2nd say uphill, foor down, strugle for power, but get a lot of smoke.

2) when you floor it, you get a lot of smoke out the back too

3) Fuel consumption isnt bad, but i know it can be better.

Now i have checked the pipe work for cracks, i took the front-left wheel off and checked the intercooler pipe-work also, and its is VERY DIRTY but there is no cracks or splits in it at all.

What could be my problem?

Cheers.
