| Don't touch those! | Intercooler Hose Split (sounds like a hoover) I know Josh F-L has had this problem but has anyone had symptoms that make your car sound like a giant hoover? Pretty sure it the turbo > intercooler hose as it only happens under load and sounds like a whooshy whiney noise. It's def not the turbo (i hope) as the turbo sound is still there aswell. I'm in wakefield at the moment so do you think it's still safe to drive as i need to get back to chester tomorrow! Cheers

| Re: Intercooler hose split Adruss85, Yeah sound like the intercooler pipe, it may have just popped off at one end, have a look down between the battery and the engine and see if anything is flapping about. There are two pipes, one from the turbo to the intercooler, this is the 2-3 inch round pipe which is lower down, then the second from the intercooler back to the engine (this is the harder plastic one higher up). If you don't know the intercooler is in the wheelarch on passenger side, if you pop out the n/s bumper grill you'll see it, maybe able to check the connections the end of you're not in a position to take the wheel and wheelarch liner off. Of course one of the rubber pipes may have split which will be harder to tell just by looking, get someone to rev it while you listen under the bonnet. You MAY be safe to drive if it's a split but if a pipe has come off i'd fix it first. Hope this helps a bit

| Don't touch those! | Re: Intercooler hose split checked the pipes and both are still on at the intercooler end, but the bottom one is covered in oil. No whooshing sound when it's stationary (not audible when sticking head out of the door) but under load it makes a hell of a racket. almost sounds like it's coming from the back. Any way to get total access to the pipes without taking off wheel and wheelarch? Thanks

| Re: Intercooler hose split In a word "NO", it's much easier to see what's going on from underneath but obviously that may not be possible for you at the mo. You say the pipes are ok at intercooler end, do you mean the Turbo end as you haven't taken the wheel off? When i stripped mine out a few weeks back where the two rubber pipes go in/out the intercooler from wheelarch to engine bay, they rub on the liner and over time i imagine wear right through, mine are boarder line. if you jack up and turn full left lock you might have enough room to look behind wheel to see where i mean. It's very badly designed and should have used hard plastic tubes rather than the rubber ones.

| Veracocha | Re: Intercooler hose split Yes, mighty whoosh when under load. Might get black smoke also, engine light does not always come on though. I drove mine from manchester to Brum like that as I had no choice but if I were you I would get it to the stealers or at least get the part asap. Split intercooler hose.

| Don't touch those! | Re: Intercooler hose split minimad, i've been under the car and had a feel of the pipes where they join the intercooler, i.e. they're not flapping about. where is the turbo? everything seems to be covered by plastic!

| Re: Intercooler hose split Sorry been out for a while, Yeah the plastic makes it a pain, the turbo is on the right hand side of the engine block (as you look at it), look down between the engine and battery, loow to your left at the engine block, you should see a round silver thing (THE TURBO) with a big black hose going to it, this hose then drops down and disappears to the right, eventually meeting the intercooler.

| re: Intercooler Hose Split (sounds like a hoover) For info when i priced up the turbo to intercooler pipe which consists of two rubber pipes with a metal pipe in the middle it was approx £45 from stealers. You can't buy just the rubber ends( even though this is the bit that fails) you have to get the whole thing which is annoying and as the rubber pipes are curved/bent you can't buy aftermarket silicone replacements without knowing the exact size and curve

| In the groove or in a rut | I had similar symtoms with a 1.9 jtd multiwagon. It turned out to be the turbo input pipe which had a poor seal at its join just above the air cleaner. Someone had used plastic cable tie to join it instead of a quick release clip or jubilee clip (See arrow in diagram). I didnt find out until it came of all together and pissed oil everwhere. Once a jubille had been used the sound went back to normall and the turbo started to work properly.
