Maybe post which warnings you get eg 'Engine Failure', 'Airbag Failure' etc, and people can respond to with info about the ones they know most about. That would be my guess.

Usually engine failure, but a full diagnostic shows nothing wrong at all, it then just goes away again.

My Memory is having a good day talking about my Stilo i have remembered that on buying the car that a rear seatbelt had siezed & had to be replaced, also within two weeks the cambelt Tensioner & water pump went, also the Aircon metal pressure pipe failed.

Luckily my wife insisted on a rather expensive 3 year Warranty option including Breakdown, relay cover Etc, we have certainly had our moneys worth & more, however it ran out at the end of May.

So the updated score is:
1 Aircon metal pressure pipe
1 seatbelt
1 Water pump
1 Cambelt Tensioner
2 Radiators
4 Coil Packs (all went seperately in the first 12 months)
2 Front brake Disks
1 Car Stereo
2 Front coil Springs
6+ Diagnostics because of multiple false warnings of engine doom
corroded terminals causing false warnings of fog lights not working

Oh & some bastard nicked all 4 Orig Fiat wheel trims

I'd say you've been unlucky (pity you didn't buy a JTD )

All Stilo owners need to wise up quickly on the false warnings, if they want to avoid expensive diagnostic time, as almost all Stilos are affected at some time or other.

The basic rule is:
  • If the errors clears on a restart then ignore it
  • If the error is repeated on a restart then there's a fair chance it's genuine
  • Errors generated whilst driving are almost always genuine.
The Stilo does suffer from quite a number of earthing problems (being stuffed full of electronics) and these are the main cause of false errors (and actual errors) as well as a weak battery as Liam has pointed out

It's extremely important to change the battery for top quality unit as otherwise if you fit a cheap one then you can often end up being worse off.

Replaced my Battery with a good Bosch 5yr Guarantee one some time ago.

The errors either as you say come on when starting or driving, then most go when you re-start.

Some however have lasted from a day to around 5, but on testing/diagnostic never any real problem found.

So the updated score in 2.5 years is:
1 Lamba sensor
1
Aircon metal pressure pipe
1 seatbelt
1 Battery
1 Water pump
1 Cambelt Tensioner
2 Radiators
4 Coil Packs (all went seperately in the first 12 months)

In that case it sounds to me like your suffering classic bad earthing issues and possibly a problem with the D5 connector (and have done for some time).

Plenty of posts on the subject if you use the Search tool and also checkout the Guides.

Re: Are Stilo's prone to going through a lot of parts?

I've had a few things go bang on my Stilo Abarth in the last 3 years:
(in no particular order)
Alternator
Battery (went due to alternator failure)
ECU
Complete Engine Replacement (due to Oil injectors in head packing up)
Aircon Evaporator Unit
Exhaust Manifold
Radio Head Unit

I calculated the other day that in 40 months, my car was at the dealer a total of about 4 months just for repairs. That excludes having to wait for 8 months for a new Aircon Evaporator unit, because 4 got lost during shipping (don't ask, I don't know how).

When the car runs, I love it. When it breaks down, I want to take it along on my next scuba dive and park it at the bottom of the ocean.

When I eventually get my radio back from being repaired (been waiting 3 weeks), I will definitely be looking at trading it in.

Re: Are Stilo's prone to going through a lot of parts?

In the 4 months ive had the stilo:

- Front wipers
- Front brake pads
- Cambelt kit
- Throttle body cleaned and diagnostic check (engine fault light was on)
- Full service with plugs, air filter etc
- New exhaust
- New passenger side interior door card
- New passenger side mirror cover & painted
- Front bumper painted due to scrape on corner
- A real lot of cleaning and polishing!

The only thing which i consider isnt wear and tear and a stilo fault is the interior door trim. The stilo interior door grap handles are so flimsy, when i got the car the passenger handle had been pulled off and glued back on. So ive now replaced the whole door card and handle with a brand new one.

An intermittent fault ive had (which hasnt appeared for a while) is the car telling me i had a rear fog light fault, even though the fog lights were not turned on, and when i checked it they are still working fine.

So i can't complain, but its never been any problem up to now (touches desk!).

Its now feeling much better though, and its starting to look like new also

Re: Are Stilo's prone to going through a lot of parts?

I had my jtd for just under a year, but I put 40k miles on it, what parts I replaced due to failure?
0, nothing. not even a light bulb. It was a good car and I missed it, even I got the bravo 150mjet now, but I have to say the jtd is a much better car to drive.

That's disgraceful, even I managed to get through 3 glow-plugs and one brake light bulb (in nearly 3 years)

Interesting, what you say about your 150Mjet vs remapped JTD115.

How does the power and handling compare?

yea, i know, sometimes i really wonder was it really a stilo? or was it a nissan in stilo clothing~~
ok, the remapped jtd vs 150mjet. the jtd is quicker, a lot quicker i have to say, may be it got soemthing to do with the 6 speed gear box in the bravo.
Handling? my bravo is the sport version, it has a sportier suspension than standard bravo, so as my 3 door jtd. The braov has a harder ride compare to the stilo, less comfortable, however, I will say i can carry more speed going into and come out of a bend in my stilo than the bravo. the looks? .......i dont think i need to say more, was driving side by side with a 55 plate black 3doors stilo today near b'mouth airport, i wished i was in the stilo!!!
fuel? jtd= 52mpg, bravo= 45.......I still hope it will get better when I put some miles on it (7k on the clock atm.) did I mention I got rattles from the driver door, roof, dash and passenger door on my 4 months old Bravo? Overall, I wished I had keep my jtd...........
