anybody know if the wheel bearings on a 2004 stilo 1.2 are machine pressed on? or the easyier version where they just push on and off by hand? i think i need to change 1 of them (i know, change in pairs!)

any info would be great.....thanks in advance....

Yes they're a push in with hydraulic press the same as the rest of the bunch. Also, thng to beware of is that there's an ABS sensor in the bearing and it won't take kindly to belting with a hammer:) It'll need careful lining up

Are you sure your wheel bearing is actually gone? As they're very robust and apart from things like water getting in they're high mileage items

to be honest i havent checked it properly, but pretty sure, i have a low rummberling after a longish jouney, i have had wheel bearing go on other cars before and its the same noise, its a shame the car has only got 29000miles on the clock !!!!!!!!
i have changed wheel bearing before, but they have been an easy job with a small hammer and a tap and they are of, just to replace with a new one, but i know many newcars have pressed on bearings, that means its easier just to pay a garage to do it.......i was hoping that wasent the case, still it gos in for a service in the next few weeks, i will get them to check it and price me up at the same time.....

second question, Apart from the famous SPRING SNAP do stilos have any problem history with.....well BOUNCE on the front wheels (and its defenatly not the shock) ?
it is also not a problem with the wheel or tyre......

not unless you lower it and keep standard shocks.

Can you be more specific?

i get Bounce at 60 - 65 kph, almost as if the wheel is oval.....
its not my tyres or wheels as i have 2 sets, winter and summer (law in Norway) and i get the same thing at the same speed on both sets....

i put it down to a worn shock....but they did it from 18000km and they have a perfect feedback when tested...i just wondered if they had any other common or not so common parts that wear prematurly? maybe a bush somwhere...

dont get me wrong, its not a bad bounce but it would still be nice to sort it....

Both sets might be out of balance but I'm sure you've considered that.

You might want to examine the anti-roll bar drop links (common failure but normally noticed as a rattle) and also possibly the drive shafts although difficult to imagine having problems at such low mileage :chin:

i will check the anti roll bar tonight, good thinking, i will let you know how it goes..

Defo not both set out of balance, not both at exactly the same speed and one set is brand new wheels and tyres....

If it's any help
ANTI ROLL BAR
tends to be a small but irritating rattle which will occur only over rough surfaces and at slow speeds, not felt through steering. On smooth surfaces won't notice a thing

TRACK ROD END
heavier clunk felt through steering on large potholes, vargueness with steering, maybe even torque steering (car changes direction with on/off gas), heavy clunk when turning and perhaps hit pothole at same time

VIBRATION at 40-50mph
Balance- maybe wheels or driveshaft coupling , whatever it is, it's going around

WHEEL BEARING
droning, getting faster and noisier as car goes faster, maybe louder when turning at speed, lessens when brakes applied

LESS WORK
Can't see any reason to replace wheel bearings on both sides if just one side has gone prematurely

it must be option WHEEL BEARING then,
do you think i could change the bearing without taking into a garage to be pressed off?
or do you think i could do it at home in my own garage?

I wouldn't think of doing it at home because, as i said, there's a sensitive part of the ABS sensor pick up ring actually machined into the wheel bearing assembly. Gently, gently is the way to install

Jack the offending wheel and rotate the wheel by hand and listen for gritty sounds and groaning. See if the other side is different. Difficult I know on the front because you're dragging round the drive shafts and gearbox internals but with an engineer's stethoscope it's easy, about £5, blow your ears off!

Get one, you'll use it lots, impress your friends, have fun with the girlfriend
