catalytic Converter !!

Dear :

I was told i need to change my Cat converter due to i failed my car MOT yesterday as the emission was too high .( Co around 0.5 % )

My independent mechanic had change the sensor , filter ,spark plug and last option to dismantle the Cat converter and double check the cat Converter was gone .

I went around and quote for the price ,the cheapest i can get is from CAT MAN around 220 pounds .However i am wondering is this a major mechanic work to change fiat stilo cat converter ?

Do i really need to bring my fiat car to fiat dealership or big company like nationawide to do it and paid around 600 to do it ?

I was told by Cat converter for stilo is next to the engine ,and it might need a experience mechanics or else bring it to big company name .

Can anyone of you here in the forum ,gave me some advised before i decide where and who to gave the job to .
Thanks

Re: catalytic Converter !!

If you read my thread, you may have success! I think you posted in it already! Are you sure the MOT tester warmed the car properly? I would follow the advice on the other thread, and then take it straight for a re-test. It worked for me

Re: catalytic Converter !!

Yes . I have done 3 retest and i take the car down to
M4 and hard run in low gear for 30 minutes before taking it to garage for retest the emssion. However it still failed .

Then my final option is i paid them and ask them to strip off the CAT converter ,and they found the cat had gone .Need to replace .

I am just wondering should i do the Cat replacement in a big garage so i get more insurance so i can buy the part and get an independent mechanic to fit it .

Is the fiat stilo cat fitting very complicated ?

Re: catalytic Converter !!

DEAR ALL :

At last , one garage in Barry ( BETS ) resolved my fiat stilo emission problem.

Before this ,i went to at least 4 major garage ; Nationwide , ATS ,fiat dealership garage to check my emission problem. All of this garage just cant be bother. The just said ,ops your emission failed ,all right change this , or change that ! They were asking me to change my catalytic converter for fiat stilo which cost around 600 pounds to fitted .

However ,when i were ask to gave it my last try on this garage below ,the chargemen ,kelvin ,he is good and he just know every single unit for FIAT stilo .I was amaze and shock about his knowledge for fiat stilo car.
He had basically resolve my emission problem and got my MOT passed.
At the end ,he found out one of my sensor which is faulty ,cant remember the name ,have to refer to my invoice .that is ,he nailed down the problem.

I have gone to 4 garage before this ,but nono of any of the mechanics are as informative as him .He is just too good for fiat car and without paying main dealer price.

I would recomemded to everyone here who stay around cardiff ,newport ,bristol to go to this place, look for kelvin .

Anyway ,thanks for everyone who help me before .

????
what did you replace it with a straight pipe or sports cat. or have you removed it completely?

I thought that if a vehicle made after a certain year was fitted with a cat as standard then it had to be fitted for MOT

The vehicle has at maufacture to have a cat or cats fitted.

If replaced there is no requirement to fit one but the vehicle must
be capable of passing the emission test for the MOT.
Very few modern vehicles can pass the test without a cat
fitted.

Re: catalytic Converter !!

actually this is quite easy to do with a diesel.. but i'm not saying how! running with no cat produces more emissions (unless you do it 'that' way - which i know you will not stick to as it is likely to damage your vehicle in the long term). This is just plain irresponsible - at least have a sports cat fitted
