Hi all, im going to change the passenger drive shaft on my abarth this weekend!

Any advice is greatly appreciated! E.g, what grease goes in to the cv boot? And do i need any special tools?

Mant thanks!

You will need a big socket to undo the hub nut, new gearbox oil and some patience.
Are you changing the whole shaft, in which case CV's should be assembled with grease inside, or are you just changing one CV joint. CV joint grease should come with the joint, or is available at any motor factors shop.

You will need a torque wrench as well to tighten down the hub nut to the correct figure..and if your changing the shaft complete with cv joint you can buy the whole thing ready assembled ..so its a straightforward change over then..

thats right phil, maybe i'll come down yours then!

Why new gearbox oil? im not Changing the g/box output shaft, just the drive shaft with the cv joints on either end?

Also, what torque setting should the hub nut be? And does anybody know the size of the socket that i'll need? ------> Too lazy to go and flip the centre cap off to check!! :D

I bought the socket for that ..cant remember what size it is though ..will have a look in the morning for you ..bought it in Hell frauds and Ozmosis served me ..didnt get it discounted though :bang:

Socket size for the hub retaining/drive shaft nut is 36mm..good luck with the job and as Oz said let us know how you got on..(y)

no, im changing the passenger side? Will i need new oil for that then?

I havent had a good look, i just know the shaft is gone, and im fitting a new one on sat!

Cheers for that Phill (y)

When I did mine, I had a lot of needle roller debris in the diff side 1/2shaft so look out for contamination inside it. I replaced the 1/2 shaft(3) on mine just as a precautionary measure also. If your just replacing the d/shaft you'll need to undo the 2x strut bolts, the hub nut, undo the inner cv boot clip and once free from the hub it just slides out.

I used commercially available Castrol moly grease when putting back together, and you'll need some pinch pliers to fit the new clip(2) for the inner cv boot. You'll only need gearbox oil if, like me, you've changed the 1/2 shaft(3). Also you'll need a chisel/punch and hammer to stake over the hub nut once its tightened to prevent it working loose (y)

The new shaft is complete, so now i'll be changing everything! So yes, i will be replacing my gearbox oil. So my next question is: what gear oil should i use (reccomendations), and how much of it will i need for a selespeed gearbox?

Also, should I use some assembly paste or some anti seize copper grease, on the splines of the shafts before i refit the drive shaft?

Update!

I have all the parts, and oils, and attempted the job today but failed!!!

I had two different 36mm sockets but none of them would go far enough on the nut to loosen it! I searched all the shops i could think of, but couldnt buy one, so i need to lathe the socket that ive got down to size on monday in work!

More updates next week!

Cheers phil, but think im going to leave it till next weekend now, and im going to attempt an oil and filter change at the same time!

Oil filter is a hard one to get to on the 2.4 so good luck with that ..If you need the socket then you know where I am..(y)
