Technical Blue Smoke on Start-up (MultiJet 150)

took the car into garage this eve so they can start it up tomorrow and check.

showed the servicing guy the vid and he goes "oooh, right" and pulls this face

well, got a call from the garage today to say it was the EGR valve or "airbox sensor". Now i know these can contribute to excess smoking but, blue smoke? Not convinced. Still they can fix it and have it back if nothing changes, i might even get a 500 as courtesy car!

Anyway part is on back order till 14th of April so for the moment i'm driving a smokey Mjet which occasionally misfires! (y)

Keep a lookout for me on the HS as i'm heading over to Wakefield this weekend!

By the way, has anyone else seen an original 500 at their local dealers? ;)

yep the egr contributes blue and excesive smoke, can make it over fuel which would be the blue smoke, its a common fault item, and the MAF their on about will give you poor and rough running(y)

Got to agree, your vid seems to suggest a REAL problem. :(

Both MAF and EGR are easy to isolate if they're suspect.
  • MAF - disconnect it
  • EGR - close it off
As you say, reassuring to know you've got a warranty (y)

I'm guessing instructions for doing these things are on this forum somewhere? May be tempted to try before i leave work tonight.

Yep, they're covered quite well if you search for them.

You can certainly disconnect the MAF sensor connector at any time but you'll need to set aside perhaps an hour, and have a good toolkit, to block off the EGR valve.

You can easily disconnect the electrical connector on the EGR valve but this wont help if the valve is mechanically jammed open.

He has an MJET 16 valve engine. Quite a different animal to the 8V JTD's most of us drive, and most posts on here relate to. EGR will be different for sure and the usual problem is them sticking open, which removing the connector wont cure.

He said disconnect the maf not the egr,he said block off the egr as unpluggin it wouldnt do anything if its stuck open.

That's a fair comment and I was going to mention it might be a bit different but thought they might be fairly similar

.....which is of course what I just said :)

well i'll try unplugging the maf sensor and see what happens as they said could be either.

i'm guessing this wont do any damage to the engine?

Point! (y)

I'm pretty fed up of this car already actually :(. Had massive issues with the dealer i bought it from, and now it's gone wrong i just hope i don't have issues with the dealer who's fixing it!

Spoke to them this morning, parts have arrived but I'm away on a course next week so it's not going in until the 14th.

Looking forward to seeing whether the fix works or not!

Ok going to pick up the car later on today - everything is fixed apparently

Will (should) i be able to tell that a faulty egr and faulty maf sensor have been replaced? Anything to look out for in particular? :)
