Re: Door check straps

Aaarrrrgggghhhhhh !!!!

It was all going so well - I'd removed the door switch panel, undone all the screws at the bottom and the torx bolts in the door panel, unclipped the tweeter and then managed to free the door clips on each side.

The door panel was then just hanging, secured only at the top near the bottom of the window. Great, I thought !

Could I get it free from the base of the window ? Could I hell :-(

What's the secret to freeing it from that, so I can finally lift it off ?

Re: Door check straps

GENTLY but with force, push it upwards (towards the sky), best done using the grab handle and from the lock pin side.

Hmmmm. This is weird.

I was pushing it upwards with what I felt was a fair amount of force and it was just not freeing off at all - I could not see any other clips that could have been holding it on unless I'm missing something near the top ?

This is bugging me big time now (n)

Re: Door check straps

This is weird. There must be something in the air. The near side door strap of the wife's 3-dr '05 Stilo has just started clicking when opening and closing, better slap some grease on it. Just a thought though, is the noise a pre-cursor to the strap snapping?

Stilo door strap.

Had a look at the N/S door strap on She Who Must Be Obeyed's Stilo 3-door as it was making a loud clicking noise. Thinking it might need some grease, I noticed that it appeared to be located by two (torx?) bolts, the lower of which was loose. Does anyone have an idea as to the size of the key or screwdriver needed to re-tighten it? Also, for some time, it has made an (intermittent) squeaking sound which sounded as it came from the rear end. It's only noticible at low speeds, possibly because general road noise masks it at higher speeds. It happens going forward and in reverse but mainly when the car is warm. If I try pulling the handbrake on when it happens in reverse the noise stops. If I try that going forwards, the sound of the handbrake bleeper masks the squeak. Needless to say, the dealer can't find anything wrong. Any ideas folks?

Re: Stilo door strap.

ive no idea about the squeaks, would of thought suspension but if dealer has seen it then theres no doubt he would of checked that.
as for your chek straps, its a T25 or T30 screw, mine made that really loud click noise, i checked it and noticed that it was broken. so double check that, open the door wide and see if you move it, if so then its probably broken, if not grease should do the job (y)

Re: Stilo door strap.

There is some movement at the lower bolt where the strap locates in the door as if it needs tightening. I wasn't very clear about the squeak from the rear. It appears intermittently but is a constant sound. If you can imagine the recorded sound of squeaky brakes but with the tape slowed down, that's about the best way I can describe it. The dealer said "... no fault found ..." so if they couldn't hear the noise, I don't think they looked any further.

Re: Stilo door strap.

It's a TX25 if memory serves, I changed one of mine not so long back. IF it has indeed snapped they're pretty cheap from Fiat and not too difficult to change at all, provided you don't mine taking the door card off and removing the speaker :) I went about it the hard way (as detailed on Fiat's own maintainance discs) and removed door glass and the inner metal door lining and all sorts...:bang:

can someone please elaborate on what these are?

and for those of you who have changed them,

why did you change them?
what was the noise it was making?
how did you identify the noise was the door check strap?

bascially i have a loose metal rattling noise coming from the front passenger side(drop a spanner onto the floor, that sound), it happens only on bumps or rough surfaces. at first i thought it was a spring go on me, but after inspection it the spring was fine. i cannot put my finger on exactly where the noise is coming from, hence quite a few possibilities. what are the symptoms of a knackered drop link? its not a CV joint or driveshaft because i know what its like when one of them goes.

no work was carried on the car recently, so its nothing that has been ill-fitted, and its not the spring catcher mod rattling loose.

:bang::bang::bang:

im booked in for a gold service on the 24th, but was hoping to find out what it is before then, so i know what to expect money wise, and possibly, if simple, sort it out myself.

cheers guys ;)

The doors on the 3 door are quite heavy, and my missus is a bit clumsy, so both of my door limiters are snapped, i got two replacements for about 8 quid each i think, but i havent done it yet

Door problem something snapped?

When i opened my door a big gust of wind took it out my hands and it went right they way back and make a breaking noise. On closer inspection its not the top main hinge its the one below i think its for stopping to door from going to far back. it has like a arm type thing and that has come out of the hole its ment to be in, not sure if it has snapped or something in side the whole has snapped.
Just wondering how much this is to repair, will it be a new door or could they just repair the broken part.

Re: Door problem something snapped?

the door still opens smoothly and everything jst wen it goes too far back makes funny noises

Broken Door

Hi guys,

This weekend a big gust of wind got hold of my front door and ripped it out of my hand when getting out of the car. This resulted in a large bang and my door almost opening up to a right angle with the car!

On further inspection the bar that stops the door opening too far has snapped/come off its mount and you can now open the door as wide as you like!

How the heck do I get about fixing this? Is it snapped (looks like it from the end) or just come un-done from somewhere inside the door?

I take it; it will be a door off job, or at least the inner door card? Or maybe I can just take the speaker out to get to it?

So, what is it and how do I fix it?! See photo for details…

Any links to the parts and part numbers I may need would be fantastic.

Thanks
Matt

Re: Broken Door

had this problem when i bought mine

i took the door card off and the internal metal card which i will say was a total nightmare, there are much more simpler ways to do it
that link posted there ^ has the diferent ways of doing it

also from wat i remember fiat are now supplying that part in plastic so best bet is to get a check strap from a scrap yard, least that way its metal and a lot cheaper

Re: Door problem something snapped?

A gust of wind the other day did this to my beloved Charly too. It pulled the door as far as it would go and i heard a snap but i couldnt figure what had broken. Only this morning on closer inspection did i realise the door check strap had broken and every time i open the door to the max and then close it again, it makes a snap sound.

Upon researching this problem... Is it really that hard to replace? Surely the door doesnt need to be dismantled just to change this small part?
