Technical My Findings with P0235 Error Code

Argh, I dont know what to do - do I take a stab in the dark and get the EGR valve replaced, and have the chance that I may have just thrown £100 away, or do I move on?!!

If only there were prettier cars around to make my decision easier!!!

Why not clean it (or at least see how dirty it looks) first ?

Take a bloody sight more than a £100 for me to think about changing my JTD (n)

A few days ago I took the MAP sensor off and cleaned it out with a load of cotton buds and since then the dreaded beep has gone. They were occuring every couple of hours prior to this so it must have had some effect? Try cleaning this sensor first!

Don't think you were suffering poor fuel consumption though as jostheboss is?

Did you read the error code?

I dont have any error codes anymore...

I'm getting a replacement EGR valve - its a recon one from Italy, and I have to part-ex my old valve, but it makes it cheaper.

Although today I went to get my tracking done, and they think somethings bent as the tracking is now correct, but still pulls to the left....

...and i have that annoying creak, and my top glovebox hinge is broken, and my bodywork isnt great!!!

Well today my problem came back. This time it was chucking out horrendous smoke whenever I picked up speed above 30mph. Lack of turbo but economy is still good. Smoke is shocking so it's in with the boys tomorrow. Any ideas on the very bad smoke?

Code reader shows P0235 & 0046.

Dealer says it's my intercooler hose. My hose has been broken for two weeks and the smoking appeared only yesterday. I advised him to tape up the hose and see if the problem continued "I suppose I could try that" he said.

I am sure it's the EGR valve but not confident this bloke even knows where to look.

you need to undo metal pipe on far right of EGR (2 x 6mm allen bolts) then remove gasket.Cut up a coke can (irn bru or other fizzy drinks are ok or strong cardboard) using gasket as a temlate but obviously dont cut out centre hole but do cut out the 2 bolt holes.Fit this insteard of the gasket, bolt back up & try it.

I wish I knew this yesterday. He said it takes a couple of hours to take off the EGR valve so that in itself worried me a bit. If he gets it working I will publicly eat humble pie. If not I have sourced the part for £60 so I can always do this myself. Cheers T.

if its the pipe im thinking of then its 2 parts, metal and hosing. its only the 6" hose that needs to be replaced but fiat only sell complete so you get the metal pipe too. :(

i would try the egr diagnostic T but ive already got the new one waiting to go on.

Right, got my new EGR valve today, and fitted this afternoon - is a bit of a bitch to do, cant really access the bottom clip for the pipe...and obviously I kept dropping tools and bolts down into the engine...

After driving home from work, my average mpg was 51, but I got caught behind a slow car and this isnt reflective of my usual journey home. As I sat at the traffic lights I saw my average mpg go down to 46, but I had only done a few miles...

I cant see if its still smoking, as I didnt have anyone following me, and couldnt boot it enough to see.

I got a few errors over the last few days, but no real loss of power, just a flash of engine warning, but I think thats my un-relocated boost valve playing up in the rain...

Will let you know if my mpg picks up. Should it take some burning off of old crap before I take the readings seriously?
