After i bought my Stilo 1.9 Jtd (73K Miles) i noticed a clunk from the Near side when taking up drive in 1st & 2nd gear (Not always though) Since i have done a few hundred miles this seems to be developing ! I noticed it tonight whilst coasting over speed humps. So when i got home i took the N/s front wheel Orf (Thats the posh way :D) & had a look. I could see Grease thrown about on the gearbox casing ! , I thought Hmm Cv gaitor has split , It has not, But does look like it has been replaced at some point as it is different to the outer & is held on with a Zip tie ( Not a metal Clip)
So i grabbed the Shaft & rotated the wheel, The noise could be heard, If you rattle, Push, pull & rock the innner Cv it also makes the noise & there is quite alot of play there, SO me thinks this is the cause of my knock/noise.

Does anyone have a rough price for a recon shaft or a CV coupling ?? & do you think my diagnosis is correct ??

Thanks
Dean

This sounds exactly like mine when it went, only 30k miles on mine though :(.

From Fiat i had to buy a complete driveshaft as they do not sell the inner cv joint seperate, so i had to get a driveshaft with inner and outer cv joints, i also bought the half shaft that fits into the gearbox/diff also and with discounts etc it was the best part of £300 and fitted it myself also.

When I looked inside the half shaft where the inner cv sits, there were all the little needle rollers that should have been in the bearing. Mine was on a Abarth but i believe iirc the JTD to have a similar setup.

Yeah mines goning on mine, but having problems getting it sorted, the garage i went to ar saying they are have problems locating a part saying it is on back order and have no idea whens its comming in and such, I spoke to fiat and they have assured me that it would still be covered under warrenty but i think the price might be 250 - 300

Hmmm this problem sounds similar to what im experiencing, ever since I got the Stilo ive had a slight clunking noise and its happening in the same road conditions Dean described, will have to mention it after my cars had its MOT in Feb!

Cheers Guys.

Sounds quite convincing then that im going down the right route !!!
Off to find a coupling we go !!! (y)

This picture may better explain. The inner cv joint is the part at the end of 1. I found the needle rollers in part number 3 which locates in the diff.

Thanks for the full info (y)

I guess then the CV joint tends to fail fairly suddenly once the bearing starts to breakdown. Would imagine deterioration is pretty rapid too once it starts :(

On mine I had a judder when accelerating whilst already at speed ie 70 - 90, but cruising at 90 its was fine, just when applying power/torque. After a month a knocking noise was apparent when accelerating. When I MOT'd my Abarth there was cv grease around the area, but no split in the gaitor , so I changed it and the rest is history. Whether it was a fault with the cv joint, or the gaitor leaking thus giving poor lubrication I don't know, it may have been down to 'driving style' but I'll never know for sure.
