this stilo is the first car i've owned with a 6 speed box and i can understand why fiat fitted it to the 1.2 and 1.4 models. The Stilo is a big heavy car and the smaller engined cars with lower torque engines need extra help in moving it.

But the 1.6, 1.8 , Abarths and Diesels could have fitted the same amount of gears in those cars and helped their mpg and/or acceleration or top speeds. Obviously, different clutch bell housings and ratios for each car but it would be unique to have a range of cars with a 6 speed gear box as standard.

Stilo Abarth 6 Speed !

1.6 with better top speed and mpg

1.8 more performance

1.9 tdi higher speed

Did fiat miss a trick here?:(
 
I looked into this when I bought my 1.6 shame I couldnt do it ..I think your damn right the six pack would have been great in the other cars as well :eek:
 
I have the old school JTD 115 engine and that has a 5 speed box. On the motorway at about 70 it is turning over about 2500rpm which isnt to noisy, its more of just a background hum.

They have fitted the new Multijets with 6 speed boxes to reduce cruising revs and improve consumption (y)

Have never driven a car with a 6 speed box, think it would be quite a strange experience :D

All things considered, if my JTD Stilo did have one, it could probably improve consumtption by a few mpg's.
 
Wasn't strange going to a 6 speed, but going into a 5 speed (fleet cars at work are all crappy vauxhalls with 5 speed boxes) is quite funny as I go for 6th and find it's not there, after I've already released the clutch and floored the gas :D

We have all Fords at work as fleet cars. We have a Focus as the pool car which i find to be quite uncomfortable to drive, the seat is to hard and the pedals seem strange (n). It seems to be a lot different to the stilo in that its power comes in one big surge and then suddenly dissapears, whereas the Stilo delivers right across the rev range more a less.

It has quite a naff 'bass less' stereo as well :D

Im glad i went for the Stilo instead of a focus like i was going to do :p
 
Going back a bit 1 know but if ever a car needed a 5th gear it was the Fiat 127 1050 Sport, that engine redlined at 7600 rpm . The power didn`t kick in till 4500 rpm trailed off at about 6800 .

back in the old days (pre speed camera) i drove it flat out from hillingdon to coventry on the M1. my ears were bleeding , well nearly

regardless, i have to admit that, the 1.4 6gears has much more "punch" than most 1.4s out there, and i´ve driven a few, which leads me to think, are they being pushed to far? i mean, you don´t see many 1.4s that get to 95hp
 
renaults 1.4 16v is 98hp but yeh 95 is good out of a 1.4 16v, ford only get 78 out of there 1.4 16v's which is crap.
 
Coming from a 5 speed to a 6 speed - addmitedly neither Stilos :p I find 6 gears is great. Not just 6th for cruising but for twisty roads where I would have been flicking between 3rd, 4th and 5th, I can get away with just 4th and 5th.

Still as Stu says, I've tried to get 7th a couple of times. Also Tipo Sedici's could have done with a 6th speed. Always thought their 5th ring was far too low for a top gear.

I think most of us have looked for that extra gear at some time or other :)

Oddly enough I find the JTD so highly geared I don't think I've ever looked for the 6th gear. In fact, I'm embarrassed to say, on one occasion I must have done something like 15 miles @ 70 before looking down and thinking "What the hell! I'm only in 4th!" :eek:
