(G) sky roof puzzle.

I posted a question in another sky roof thread but as it's still puzzling me I thought i'd best create a whole new thread to pick peoples brains on here..

My sky roof has a strange rattle, only when the cars ticking over. It seems theres a certain resonate frequency that does it which is just slightly above the ticking over rpm. The rattle is on the right hand side above the rear passenger seats.
I thought it might have been a problem with one of the glass panels not sealing properly with the foam edge of the roof, as when the roof is open it doesn't happen. it's also much worse with the sun shield thing back.

One strange thing is with the sky roof open on the first setting (ie the flap at the front raised only) the rattle stops, which is puzzling me as the other parts remain in their relative closed positions when you choose settings.

Also by opening and closing the roof you can either make it worse or better or occasionally make it go all together, making me reluctant to open the roof inviting it back again!

has anyone has similar problems? or have an idea how I can solve the problem?

I had the same problem. I discovered that the trim that runs around the inside of the roof needs to be pushed firmly back into place. I did this all the way round and it cured alot of noise. I still get the resonant noise from the blind occasionally, but if you try the above, I am sure you will see some improvement.

I know that my roof lining, the little strip between the outside of the internal roof (so to speak - if you get my meaning), that can rattle sometimes, its not overly excessively noisy.

My skyroof can creak and groan sometimes when i pull on an awkward angle, for intance with one wheel up the higher part of my drive.

It could be the case that you perhaps have a loose bolt or something , i have noticed that when you open the first flap and flip it up, the rear ones move back a little bit, and this could push the bolt onto something causing it to stop rattling.

Do you have a diesel engine in your Stilo, because that can cause quite a bit of vibration through the roof and internals.

Yes I have a JTD. Best bet is to open the roof, stand up in the middle of the car and inspect everything. Tighten every screw and lets see what happens.

Otherwise, bring it down to me and I will fix it

My roof blind rattles when it is opened back to the last roof segment, I get a rattle in tune with the revs of the car.

Turn your music up on the impressive stereo and you cant here it

I've got to say mine does too but not all the time and even when it does rattle it tends to go after a few miles.

Suppose its just whilst it adjusts to certain things. Mine rattles quite bad just lately when its 'cold' when i first get in the car, but after 5-10 mins it dissapears .

One thing that is annoying (but not to bad), is when i drive with the skyroof fully open at approximately 60mph there is a whistle just at the right hand side of where my head is . Either increasing or decreasing my speed sorts it though .

Does anyone actually once there skyroof is open have it only partway open. I always open mine fully, even on the motorway .

How much I open mine is based in temperature but I always close it on motorways (and use A/C).

Funny thing is it's really quite noisy when half open (been a few threads on this) but becomes quieter if opened fully.

Must admit opening/closing the skyroof is a great pose for the benefit of anyone following

Mine has all of the above too (light rattle at idle - towards the rear, and the squeak/groan on odd angles). Only notice it when passengers are in the car and stereo is turned down!

mine has developed a small rattle when the car is started up, and idling normally, but if i move forward a foot, or rev the car slightly sometimes it stops, and sometimes it doesnt

turning the stereo up drowns it out quite a lot

going down slightly bumpy country roads as well, you can hear it creaking and groaning a bit as well

bring on another few months when i will be able to put it down again

just to update...

a few weeks ago, the roof was really rattling one morning so I went to put it at setting no1 (ie the front flap open) but the roof was lining was frozen. The front flap kinda stuck in half way open/halfway closed while trying to open fully, and eventually it opened.

Crazy thing is, since then the rattle has disappeared!!, all the seals are fine as well, as we have had plenty of rain since to show up any problems!!

Josh, we had lovely sunshine in Manchester today, got the roof open... cue lots of funny looks but was absolutely fine with the heaters on full..

agree with you there, mine still gets opened now, just not in the morning when the airs damp, or in the evening when its the same (monday to friday).

mine will be getting used on the way to the gym now though as its dry as anything, if a little dark

i want the sun though, i loved driving through york with windows down, skyroof open, and power ballads on the stereo

.. forgot to mention.. only opened it in the morning to get rid of the rattle.. my neighbours might think i'm slightly mental at 6:15 with the roof fully open lol.
