Some advice required! Thanks

Hi All,

Could do with a bit of advice on my 2002 1.6 Dynamic Stilo.
It runs fine (touches wood) and I have no major probs (touches wood again).
I have no oil leaks and no smoke from exhaust.
However I have noticed that as my car has got older it seems to be using alot more oil that it did from new.
I probably top my oil up about a 1 litre per month (about 800-1000miles) I know FIAT say this is perfectly normal but I find it a bit annoying/expensive.

I used FIAT dealers in the past for servicing who always used Castrol GTX magnatec 10W40 - however towards the end of my warrantly the consumption was up to 1 litre so I seeked advice from an independant who advised to go back to a normal non synthetic oil which will build up more Carbon and stop the oil consumption (apparntly VW and Skoda were doing this as customers had complained on high oil consumption). This however does not seem to have solved the problem - if anything it uses a little bit more (at least its cheaper)

So I am wondering what everyone elses Oil consumption on the 1.6 is like and what oil thay are using and any recommendations.
I wish to select an oil and have oil/filter change ASAP so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I keep reading about this Selenia 20K - is it really worth changing to as it will be hard to keep buying to continually top up as I do. (ebay - £35)

I know there is a (many) thread(s) on this but I didn't want to hijack - I hope I haven't broken any rules.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

You don't say how many miles yor car has covered (which I suspect is fairly critical). I have the same model as you and after 30,000 miles it doesn't use a drop between annual services. I use Mobil 1 fully synthetic.

If you're sure it's not leaking then the only other way out for the oil is past the oil control rings or valve seals.

To check the latter two possibilities then simply remove all 4 spark plugs and examine for oil contamination. If one plug looks a fair bit worse than the others then that's your problem cylinder.

If they're all the same then you're problem is just general engine wear and there's probably not a lot you can do about it

Re: Some advice required! Thanks

Thanks for replys - car has done 50,000.

I don't think there is a problem with cylinder as chap who serviced car would have noticed oil on spark plugs and informed me - I assume anyway!

So if it is just general engine wear should I be bothered about the type of oil I use???synthetic/semi synthetic etc...????

Cool Re: Some advice required! Thanks

Well many people think that carbon build up is a good thing and in many cases it not ..gummed up piston rings [as Argo has already said] can be a major cause of high oil consumption what I would do is get yourself some Forte engine flush run it in the car for around 100 miles and then flush out and replenish with a good 10/40 oil ..you can get valvoline at the euro car centres for about £15 a tin [5ltrs] they do oil filters for the stilo there as well ..the forte flush will free up any crap that's stopping the piston rings doing their job and also remove any harmful gums and resins from your engine ..give it a try I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised

Here you go just found it for you
