General Fiat Stilo Abarth 2.4L 20v Turbo!

General Fiat Stilo Abarth 2.4L 20v Turbo!

any news??

Nearly all back together, just got to sort out the air intake to the turbo, very tight with all the other pipes in the way. Got to drop the petrol tank to get another fuel line to the pump. Need someone with a Fiat examiner to come round to get the engine started, as I've put a new ignition ECU on and need to have an exhaust section made between the first and second cat, and that's about it, I think!

you keeping the second cat then?

Yes, the only reason is that it's a brand new exhaust, and I don't won't to chop it around until I need to replace it. Also, I've spent too much money on this project so far, and I'm trying to cut back and don't want to make more work for myself. I'm getting to the stage where I just want to get it back in the road. It's becoming a pain driving around in my other car, which is a two seater, even though it's a nice car!

looking great there dax! im really impressed with you commitment to the project (y)

and those seats look stunning!

what you doing with the original interior/seats? im interested if you want to sell ;)

I'm going to store ALL the parts I've taken off in this conversion and put them in the loft, just in case I want to change it all back again at latter date. Pathetic, aren't I!

you got around the airbag light then dax, you use a resistor or just remove the sensor and place it under the seat. or possibly just turn the airbag off all to gether as if you had a child in the seat. lol

gotta say its looking good, have you had any luck with trying to get the ecu sorted out ?

Got another ECU which is without seat and curtain airbags, will exchange this with whats there at the moment. As you can see from the picture, the seat base sensor is massive, and I've got to get this in the base of the new seat!!

Not really ..I think your very wise ..that lot must have cost you a small fortune (y)

I have kept every single receipt, and have done a rough tally, and I'm shocked and embarrassed as to what I have spent on this project, I can't tell no one! However, it's been challenging and fun learning and researching all the parts required. Just got to start the thing now!! I look at the first post I made on this forum, saying I was coming to the end of this conversion, in fact, It was only just beginning!!

looking good Dax! once its finished are you going to get it along to a few meets and track days?? soooooooo want to see it in the flesh!

Would be nice to come to a meet as soon as I can give myself a good kick up the arse and get the last bits finished, find another cheapish Sparco Milano 2 seat in beige and find someone with a Fiat Examiner to get it started!

Quality project Dax, wish i had the balls/cash to undertake something like this as it must be very rewarding! And kudos with the Q2 diff.... i'm getting very tempted by so many things!

By the way i have the 1.9 Mjet 150 Sporting if you need any help/pictures etc!

Good luck!

Dax,

Congratulations on the project !

I was wondering what did you do with the intake manifold ? Did you keep the VIS ?

I'm asking this because the 2.4 20v Marea here in Brasil uses a plastic intake which is a problem when adding a turbo. I imagine that is the same for Stilo's 2.4. The same happens on 1.8 16v Marea which also has a plastic intake manifold.

Most common way to solve this here is to use the metal 2.0 20 Turbo from Marea, which solves the problems but loses it variation - VIS.

Used a Lancia Thesis inlet manifold:

The rest is all here:

Thanks for that ! It cleared a lot of doubts.

It seems to be the same as our Marea Turbo, as it is the same engine (the photos below are a 2.4 with Turbo intake):

A do have some questions though, if you don't mind:

1) Why using diesel parts, such as fuel pump and oil cooler ?

2) What pistons are you using (original measures or different ?) Are they forged ?

The reason for a diesel fuel in-tank unit is that it has a fuel return on the unit, the stilo 2.4 unit has not got this facility. It is also quite easy to replace the actual pump to a higher flow rate as well.

The reason for the diesel oil cooler is that it fits as a standard item and available from Fiats (although quite expensive), hence not having to make brackets up and trying to find somewhere to fit an after market cooler, which I did try to do before I new Fiats did an oil cooler for the Stilo!

The pistons are a special item, and are made by CP pistons, they lower the compression ration to 8.5:1. The con-rods are uprated as well. Both these items where supplied by Torque Italia, before they stopped trading. Both pistons and con-rods are forged.

Nice, Dax !

Seing the piston head was a little bit smaller, i thought you had reduced compression rate to increase turbo pressure :D

I have seen on one o your posts that intake camshaft from 2.4 is the same from Lancya Thesys (from 2.0 20v turbo engine), however, that seems odd because on our spare parts for Fiat in Brasil, we can see that exhaust camshafts are the same and intake are differente from both cars.

I imagine that can be true and that Fiat would change camshafts between Brasil and Europe.

Regarding oil cooler, i meant why using the diesel one, instead of the petrol one from the 2.0 20v turbo engine. Is it better ?

I have changed the inlet camshaft for the 2.0L 20v turbo one as the exhaust is the same. Must have read the parts information incorrectly when I made that post!

You cannot use the 2.0l 20v turbo oil radiator without making brackets up and finding some way of fitting it, and the pipes become a problem, this is what i tried in the first instance. If you use the 150hp turbo diesel Stilo oil cooler radiator, it fits perfectly where is meant to. If you mean the oil cooler take-off plate, then that is off a 2.0l 20v turbo, but with modified oil outlets as shown in the photo gallery of my car.
