General Some really good news for everyone

Clearly we all have different experiences.

My experience of my current Vectra is extremely good. I had a clutch problem early on, which was replaced without any quibble, since then I have had the radio replaced.

That is it in over 55,000 miles. Yes I have noew replaced rear brakes pads and need new tyres, but it has been a dream compared to the Stilo.

Both are modern cars, and IMO should have very similar quality and durability.

I don't break cars at all, I actually look after them extremely well and am very careful with them. My last car did 85,000 miles on rear tyres and same brake pads. This was a Vectra B Diesel.

I simply don't have that level of confidence in the Fiat at all. Constantly worrying if the car will stop is not a good thing. At least dull but reliable is better than no go.

No offense intended but I'd say many of those items shouldn't have gone wrong on a car with 30k miles!

Many????? Dont you mean the starter and probably the exhaust and battery (which may not be down to Fiat). The rest are all service items. I ran an old Alfa Romeo with no oil for 6 months (it smoked too much so I stopped topping it up with oil when it ran low....problem solved!!!:D  ) but even I wouldnt try and get 30k out of a set of brake pads or tyres or expect every single bulb on the car to last 3 years. Unrealistic!

30K for brake pads isn't impressive at all. Like above I've just changed mine on the rear on my Vectra at 68K, and my last car went to 85K miles. So, 30K isn't good at all.

1(possibly),2,3,4,7 shouldn't need doing by 30K IMO.

Brakes depend on how you use them. I'm sure many Stilo owners have done better than 30k.....maybe he goes into every corner like its his last then jams on the brakes!!!!:D

I did say excluding consumables!

An entire exhaust and a new starter in a car with 30k miles, I assume that the owner didn't chuff the battery (can't really see how you would - it's not like he could've left his lights on) so that should last too.

As I've stated I wouldn't expect to spend anything above consumables for the 50k miles. certainly not 30k!

Fair go if you rant the cock off it mind.

[ how many typos did I put in this one - d'oh! ]

I'd say that 30k is pretty good for front pads. Depends on what type of driving you're doing.

Lots of motorway miles will be kind to pads. Short town journeys will kill them.

I have an 04 JTD (30k) on original pads. Just MOT'd and no advisory. So far I have had new front tyres , 1 set, and new wipers and that's it. I wouldnt say I rag the car but I do push it at times.

Steve, you're taking the biscuit a bit with this comment.

Your Stilo was an absolute disgrace the last I heard of it. You admitted the service light has been flashing during pretty much your whole time of ownership and I seem to remember both door cards are close to hanging off. Personally, I'd refuse to drive even a 10 year old runabout in that condition (at least till I'd fixed it).

This surely is the nub of the problem. Most people on this Forum I'm sure would take a similar view and have gotten the car to 100% again (just like LoBsTeR has). But for some reason, I just can't fathom, you couldn't be bothered. I think you just took an early dislike to the car (or perhaps your dealer) and that's how you decided it was going to stay.

My last car did 85,000 miles on rear tyres and same brake pads.
My recollection of older cars is that the rear drums never wear out and the only time they get changed is when contaminated from a leaky cylinder. I'm sure you'll find that the brakes on cars like the Stilo are far more sophisticated and make the rear brakes work a lot harder than has been the norm in the past

All said and done, I still wish you well in general and hope you enjoy your Mazda (y)

Close Jas. The friction material wears down, and if you're unlucky the shoes can actually grind into the drum so you can't get it off. On my Punto we actually had to crack it off with a 4lb lump hammer!

Yep (I think you know what I meant to say ;))

I certainly remember that problem for the fronts (hey! I'm not that old really! :p) but can't say I remember too many issues with the rears

Hells bells Argo front brake drums I'm thinking the 1950s here  you really are an oldie and you been fibbin about your age :chin:

Argo thanks for your comments, but, to clarify my earlier postings. The rears were discs and I meant front AND rear lasted 85,000 miles. The car was 51 reg, so was hardly old.

Yes the door handle took too long to fix, it is done now. the drivers side is OK.

Yes the service due indicator has been on, but I take great exception to paying £40 at my local dealer (their charge) and, actually, having done the servicing myself (qualified Engineer), they won't even do it - but won't explain why not. So it has stayed showing during the start up check process. This has pissed me off a little.

Yes I do look after my cars and I think I have cleared up any mis-understandings now that may have shown otherwise. I've just had a lot on this last year with a few things.

I hope everyone on here well in the future too.

Time to go.

Well.

Just changed the insurance over to the new car, and will be picking it up very soon.

To cut a long story short, I have found most people on here to be a very helpful, friendly bunch. So thanks for all the help along the way. I would have pulled out what little hair I have without you guys.

I wish you all very happy, trouble free motoring and best wishes for all your futures.

Ciao !

Stilo-Ste you have my full sympathy and understanding why you've gone Japanese. I purchased my MW as an ex demonstrator about 6 months old. I've had it 4 years and this is the list of faults and replacements (wear & tear)

Rear Airbag sensor failure.
Rear seat cover zip broken - new seat cover.
Tailgate struts failed
NSF suspension coil fractured.
OSF suspension coil fractured (12 months after NSF)
Split tail gate glass slipped in mountings....took dealer 4 attempts to fix.
Split tail gate release mechanism solenoid failure (unable to close tailgate glass).
Front passenger seat belt locking mechanism failure.
Under body tray fell off.
Reverse gear/reversing lights sensor failure.
Fuses in battery box corroded in place.
O/S rubbing strip fell off.
aprox 18 tyres replaced!!!!!!
Uneven tyre wear front
Uneven tyre wear NSR
MAF sensor failure
heated rear screen element burnt out.
Pads and disks replaced all round (twice).
Lack of power when cold
rear fog light bulb failure warning..even though both fog lights working.

I think that's the list, but so much has gone wrong in 4 years I forget.....

On the plus side I did manage to go 105K miles before changing the cambelt

I still have my MW as I can't afford to change at the moment.... child care fees per month cost more than a Ferrari on HP !!!!!!!

I brought a JTD MultiWagon fully loaded (leather, skyroof, alarm, heated seats, climate control), with 87000 miles on the clock, done 5000 miles, and the only issue I have had is that the aircon needing gassing, and change a blown fuse, its probably the most solid car I have ever driven, my partner brought a Multijet sporting on the strength, and its really good, so one happy bunny with FIAT right now

As previously stated, 8 Italian cars, 4 of which have been Fiat including one as a company car. I keep going back because the engines are cracking the used price for a buyer against spec is fantastic and they are a lot better than people give them credit for.

They are not perfect and neither are BMW, Merc Ford, Vauxhall etc. The difference is, you don't pay more for similar issues.

You pay your money and take your chance, so far the Stilo so far has been good, does upto 54mpg, loves long distance work and can carry everything we need. Why spend £3-4k more?

When I saw the title, Some Really Good News For Everyone' I thought this was going to be a thread informing us that FIAT were going to refund all Stilo owners for supplying us with such a poor product, or maybe even offer us New Bravos for free to reinstate our faith in the brand......................
