To buy or not to buy...

Hello Stilo people,

I love my Cinq but I shall soon be gaining a lovely big wadge of cash and I'm gonig to buy a new car. I've narrowed it down to a few realistic options: A Coupe 16v Turbo (which will probably cost too much to run if I'm honest), an Alfa 156 (probably a 1.8 or 2.0) and a finally a Stilo 1.8. So....

Persuade me to buy the Stilo please!

Realistically it will be the most finacially achievable one but I know nothing about them really. How reliable are they? and what can I do to squeeze a few more BHP out? Also what the hell is the difference between a Dynamic and a Sporting???

Oh, and finally, is the 1.8 engine a good choice? I think it will make a have a good balance of performance and cost

Sorry for so many questinos!

Re: To buy or not to buy...

It depends on what you want really. If you're after a rewarding drive with great handling it's got to be a 156.

However, if you are set on a Stilo I'd forget about the 1.8, although I'm sure it's a fine motor, and go for a JTD.

In fact, same applies for a 156 to be honest.

It is..............but, i'd recommend the JTD engine for either the Alfa or stilo, with a remap and induction you'll be looking at 150+bhp and with 40-50mpg. with the near 2.0 litre lump you'll have better capacity for cruising speeds too, bonus!

If you're looking for more power then the 1.8 may be better for tuning but i don't think you get much more than 170bhp, i stand corrected if someone has already

why? - power & economy plus the good looks of a 3 door stilo - what's not to like?

Between the 3 cars, I will get a stilo any days, mainly because it is the newest out of the three and you will get more out of your money.
Why not a diesel? dont make up your mind yet, go out there, find a JTD, stilo or 156, give it a test drive, actually, what is your budget? how about a 147? you'll get the best out of the stilo and 156 from one car, a 147 jtd is even better!!!
Back to the point, get a 04 onward car, they are pretty much problem free. I dont drive a 1.8, so cant really tell you how to get more bhp from it, however, a £300 remapped will get a 115 jtd to 160bhp, still dont like diesel?

Re: To buy or not to buy...

Sorry guys, I just don't like diesels!! I know they have loads of torque and good mpg, but despite this I just like petrol. I like revvy engines plus I don't really do alot of motorway cruising. Plus its basically the same to insure for petrol or diesel it seems.

Also, I've thought about a 147. They are very nice, maybe that can go on the shortlist too....

But no diesels!!!

Re: To buy or not to buy...

just to clear up the 1.8 is a great engine, ive had mine for 3 years now and its been great , cant fault it! make sure you get a 04+ model to avoid any variator issuses!

Its only group 7 insurance, not much difference to the JTD. Why not test drive both and make your own choice.

Its not that juicy on petrol around town i average 35-38mpg and on motorway journeys 42-45mpg, that is after the remap.

and with the GSR induction and remap which is about £400, suzie over at stilosport saw 153bhp with no other modifications. Ive got a full through system and got 156bhp from the same.

Drinks abit of oil, but i think that common with most stilos, any stilo is spanking really! Good luck in your search...

186bhp has been achieve in a 1.8, just to clear that up too ....alot of tuning potential just depends how big your wallet is

If you wana ask me any questions just PM fella

Re: To buy or not to buy...

The Stilo rally cars were 1.8 and they got the 186bhp that Rob said.

Shame you don't want a JTD
