Air fans - not keeping me cool!

I'm not a technical person, I'm talking about the fans to keep the driver and passengers.

I have a 1.2L 5-door Stilo. It's a regular Stilo, not the ACtive model with Air-con.

I find that there is hardly any air coming out of the fans when I switch them on, even when I turn the temperature dial down as low as it can go I have to whack the power up to 4 to get a decent amount of air coming in and that's when I turn the air off the windows and onto my face. When I do that however the noise eventually gets to me.

Is this normal in a Stilo? I've had a 1 L Corsa in the past and that car gave me far better air. I had a service back in January at a Fiat dealer but I never mentioned it to them at the time as in winter I'm generally trying to keep the car warm .

Any suggestions?

Re: Air fans - not keeping me cool!

Have you changed your pollen filter?, i just done mine and it was blocked with everything you can imagine. The new filter cost around £20 from the dealer i was unable to source another cheaper version. There is a guide in the guide section on how to change it

Wow Roy, thanks for that! I've just had a look at the guide section and found the link

That's cool! I might try that out.

Do you have aircon?

I don't think a non-aircon car would have a pollen filter?? when you turn the fan speed from 1-2-3-4 do you get any increase in flow at all?

Hi

Just changed mine. Halfords can order you a cabin filter . They cost around £ 10. Even the non aircon cars have them. I don't know how much they cost at Fiat dealers.

Re: Air fans - not keeping me cool!

I got a filter from fiat £10.80 because i had the same prob, new filter improved the damp dog smell i had when i bought it, but still rather warm and weak air flow compared to other cars i've owned.

Re: Air fans - not keeping me cool!

Hi guys, no I don't have full aircon but as still owindy said my airflow is weak. I do get improvement when i go through 1-2-3-4 but to be honest it's still terrible compared to my old 1L Corsa!

I'll have a look for a pollen filter and if there is one I'll try cleaning it first and then if there's no improvement I'll look at replacing it.

At level 4 the airflow isn't bad but the fans sound like a hoover and there's only so much of that you can take along with road noise in the cabin...

Re: Air fans - not keeping me cool!

yea like other people said pollen filter is the first thing to look at... and cheapest

other option could be broken tempreature control flap, but we'll see what the pollen filter does first.

Re: Air fans - not keeping me cool!

Official recommendation is to change pollen filter every 20k km so at 20k miles it's often had it. Only gets changed at dealers if you specifically ask for it to be changed so it's the first item to go for if you have reduced air flow, air con or not.

There's a heck of a volume of air passing through it in that time, imagine the Albert Hall being filtered by a one foot square filter and you can see why it's a throwaway item and why it smells bad after a year. No good just spraying anti bacterial down there, think what you're breathing in all the time

Re: Air fans - not keeping me cool!

I'm probably not going to get time to do this for a few weeks as I'm getting married Saturday week (plus honeymoon afterwards) and I've a lot to do between now and then so I don't think the missus will appreciate me doing anything with the car while she's working on wedding stuff.

If I do get it done, I'll post back, otherwise it could be late-July before it's done

Re: Air fans - not keeping me cool!

I bought my stilo from a dealer in bristol and sent it back after a week cus i thought the air fan was knackered, but they checked it, serviced the air-con and told me that the air fan was working fine. Alot of noise and not much action im afraid.

Re: Air fans - not keeping me cool!

i have always thought the fans were pretty weak compared to other cars, but just thought it was a stilo characteristic. it gets the job done, just not as strong as it should be

that plus my air con is leaking (probably the famous broken pipe ) and i still love her to bits

Just about everybody thinks that - until they change the pollen filter (now how many times has that been mentioned now )

Granted may not be as strong as some cars but don't think I've ever had the fan higher than "2" on the hottest of days.
