Hello Everyone

Just wondering if anyone has a guide on replacing the top suspension mounts on a Fiat Stilo

Many thanks
Louisa

Basically, it's done like this:
  1. Loosen the wheel, and loosen the nut on the suspension strut in the engine bay.
  2. Jack the car up.
  3. Remove wheel.
  4. Remove the two bolts holding the strut onto it's carrier.
  5. Remove the nut securing on the antiroll bar drop link (think this is 16mm).
  6. Remove the nut in the engine bay.
  7. Lower the whole unit out of the suspension turret
  8. Use a spring compressor to compress the spring, and remove the top strut bearing/mount.

Refitting is the opposite.

I'm still getting a knocking coming from the front suspension when going over bumps (mainly on the right hand side of the car) after changing both drop links. Can the top strut bearing/mount cause knocking? Are they replaceable?

If not, what else could the knocking be? (might start a new thread!)

Cheers :)

The end of the steering rack perhaps. Top mounts are replaceable. Don't think the top mounts can produce "clonks" as it is a loose fit to the turret.

For removal (with picture description), refer to the guides section on this very forum.

Morten.

Track rod ends? Hummm...maybe :)

Cant feel any movement in the wheel and i'm not getting clunks through the steering though...

The bearing is replaceable and will knock if worn ..don't think they are cheap either :chin: have you had the spring catcher fitted I have heard that this can make a quite bad clonking noise so check that its securely fitted and not rubbing on anything ..

Hey all

Can anyone tell me which one of these parts has the movable "bearing" which allows movement in the front suspension strut?

Many thanks in advance

The bearing is the metal ring that clips onto the top of the bottom part of the mounting. It has to be fitted with the metal ring part at the top as in your picture.

All the parts have to be aligned correctly when refitted to the spring and shock absorber>

Out of interest, why are you asking, Ballack? Got problems with the top mounts? Knocking noises or something?

Hi Phil

No mate I have no knocking noises on the Schumacher lol, I was informed a long time ago that the top mounts of various Fiat cars such as the Stilo have bearings in them which Dave has just confirmed that this is not true. In actual fact it is divided in to three parts which I did not know, 1 being the top mount and the 2 metal bearing clipped on the top of the 3 bottom mount, so I will bear in mind next time when I am given advice to always double check it, misleading information has its downsides (y)

Hey guys, iv had knocking on the front of my stilo jtd for about a year. Since then iv had new wishbones, new drop links, and just today new strut mounts and bearings and its still clunky. the only thing i can think of now would be the anti-roll bar bushes.
Anybody have any thoughts on that?

Cheers

Hi, had a look today. no visible signs of any oil leaks or rips/tears in the gaiters. Iv had a go at my tie rods, wishbones drop links with a jack and a great big bar and everything seems to be tight. iv even checked all the sub-frame bolts, a couple of them were a lil under tight but they didnt move far with a 2ft bar. the "clunk" is still there. im at a loss :(
