Just like to say that over the last 170 miles my 1.8 has returned 48.7mpg...this was a mixture of 80% motorway rest B roads.
Usually on the motorway I cruise at about 100mph indicated, this time I stuck to 65/70...what a huge difference it made.
Accelerate gradually and anticipate braking early, that`s the secret for good fuel returns.

Amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it! I take it that economy is average and not instant! Very impressive. I'll give you a comparision when I take my car 4 up down to Alton Towers this time next month. See if i can better you! ;)

53 plate, Stilo 3-door, Sassy grey, Alloys to follow, 1.2 Active, 5-Disc CD-Changer -- 45mpg!

Yeah that was average consumption!!!!I live about 12 miles from Alton Towers so you will see the sort of roads I mean. My advise to you is get there early as it is a very popular attraction, especially during the summer hols when the kids are off.
Enjoy yourselves[8D][8D][8D][8D][8D][8D]

I'm on around 47 mpg, mostly 20 mile journies on A roads. I have found the same as you, driving sensibly works wonders. Also, the number of cold starts affects MPG. Short journies mean that the engine is colder for longer and so poorer economy.
I've just got my car back from it's first service, so watch out for my new thread. I'm just waiting to cool down first or I might say something I regret.
