Stilo 1.6 suspected ECu fault

Hi all
I'm new to this site, dont be put off by my user id its my car I hate (at the moment)not yours.
Any advice on the following would be greatfully recieved.

I have a stilo 1.6 Dynamique. Some tme ago My car started stalling when getting to a junction and the engine warning light would come on. An ecu code reset solved the problem a couple of times but then one day it stalled and then the power steering failed too and then recently the engine started misfiring and it appears to be using tons more fuel. I borrowed a scanner from my mate and got multiple codes. I didnt write the numbers down but they went a bit like this.
- Curcuit board malfunction
- Multiple cylinder misfire
- random multiple misfire
some other I cant remember.
Someone I was speaking to said this is likley to be an issue with the ECU or enginemanagement system.
Any ideas? anyone with a similar experiance.

Re: Stilo 1.6 suspected ECu fault

Not too helpful I'm afraid, but I can only suggest taking to a Fiat garage and let them check the codes on examiner. It could well be something they've seen a million times before and be able sort it easily.

Even if it is something more sinister at least you'll know what you're dealing with.

Maybe some of the Techs on here will be able to offer some advice.

Thanks
I've got it booked in for next week. I just have a natural suspicion of dealers and wanted to be prepared and see if anyone else has seen anything similar. It looks like the stalling thing is very common, but looks like mine has gone mental and added more problems.

Cool Re: Stilo 1.6 suspected ECu fault

Hello and welcome to the stilo section you haven't said the age of your car but I'm guessing its an early model around the 02/52 by the sound of things the dealer didnt do the works on your car IE- ECU and throttle body updates takes about Half an hour on an examiner and while your hooked up he can check out the other faults as well for you

Change your name to something more suitable then.

Probably P0300/301/302/303/304 all generic misfires likely due to a coil(s) breaking up under load.Requires dealer visit incase of possible catalyst damage.

Thanks, yes looks like I have to bite the bullett and get it in to the dealer sooner rather than later.
P.S I'll change my ID to something more suitable when my stilo and I are friends again.

Re: Stilo 1.6 suspected ECu fault

Just a thought...
but have seen a few comments about d4 connector???
Could the following have naything to do with the problems I've encountered?

some time ago my battery went flat and I used jump leads but connected both cables to the battery. Which I learned soon after was a no no. consequently the car would not start. I got the AA out and they traced the problem to the big fuses that sit on top of the battery.
I took these fuses to the parts dep of my local fiat dealer. 2 of the parts team looked at these fuses scratched there heads and said oh I never seen these before and it will take a few days to order them.

frustrated I bought a couple of cheap metal fuses ruffly the same size and bolted these in instead. with the intention of replaceing them later. Of course I never did. also one of the screws for the casing went missing which means water could have got in as well.

It was a good couple of months before I started having any problems but....

Could this have anything to do with any of the issues I've seen?

Well if you treat you car like that then I guess you really must hate it

You want to get your Stilo back to it's original spec ASAP (it's the first thing to do in any repair job).

Water is a killer for the Stilo so check out D4 and clean up any sign of corrosion.

Re: Stilo 1.6 suspected ECu fault

O.k looks like I will have to change my ID . I selected it at a time of true frustration when actually, Ive had more fiats than any other make. 5 so far and they have all been fine.

At the time when I replaced the fuses I was in a hurry to get it back on the road as I rely on it for work.

I guess i'm gonna pay for it now . oh well lesson learned.

Excellent!!!! I tried this last night having found the instructions elswhere on the forum. Drove to work today didn't stall once. Normally I would have stalled 4 or 5 times.

Hopefully one less thing to pay the dealership for. Just the power steering and the misfiring to get sorted now.

"today I like fiat a little more"

Re: Stilo 1.6 suspected ECu fault

my dads 03 stilo m/w had a full service on the 2nd of feb. i was just reading this thread and the same kind of thing happened to him yesterday morning. he started it up as normal but it was barely revving and it started to splutter..it then cut out and the engine management and rench symbol came up on the dash and a buzzer went off. there was a very strong smell of petrol. he tried it a few times and the same thing happened. It was towed to his fiat garage where it stayed to 5.30pm. They told him they cleaned a sensor and reset the ecu...didn't go in to much detail and charged him €110.66. he hopped in the car..drove off the forecourt...20 metres down the road..loses power...the same thing happened!! !!straight back to the garage. Just got a phone call from the garage...4 coils need to be replaced and while hes there he should get the rear bushes done aswell.....costing.......about.....€650!!!!!!!

Can anyone fill me in on the coils and how much it should cost?the service was 2 feb..should this have been picked up on the service? can anyone give me advice on paying for this..because he paid €110.66 for absolutely nothing yesterday and they expect him to pay for this on top of it and he had a €600 service in feb. the bushes he knew had to be done so this isn't a problem. the garage have been good to us in the past but this seems like we're being taken for a ride.

Re: Stilo 1.6 suspected ECu fault

Dearie me! People tend to smile at you and treat you nice when you're giving them lots of money, it's a human characteristic

What on earth is going on? Clean a sensor and reset and ECU and it's 110 euros? You pay them to fix the fault and they don't fix it? They don't test drive it and it still is no different when you drive off the forecourt? There are 4 independant coils on your car, independant = they don't all go at the same time and if one had gone why didn't they pick it up when it first went in? If one coil is gone you don't need to replace all 4. Your choice if you do

What's up with the rear bushes? Aren't they supposed to be concentrating on fixing the fault it went in for?
Do a search on coils and rear bushes and get yourself informed or pay the consequences. New coils are around 45 euros each

Re: Stilo 1.6 suspected ECu fault

By way of an update
Stalling - Fixed - cleaned throttle body took 15 minutes (thanks to fiat forum)
Misfire - fixed- replaced coil 5 minute job - cost me less than £50 for the part.(thanks to fiat forum)

I reckon this forum has probably saved me about £300, as before I would had these fixed by the dealer.

Only issue left is the Biggy (power steering) I get an error on my mates scanner of U1702 which I think translates to loose connection somewhere in the "high speed can"????

It looks like this one has beeten me so.....Into the dealer tomorrow she goes. unless any of you guys have any last minute ideas????
