JTD versus VW Golf TDI 130?

Hi there Diesel Weazels!

I have a 2002 JTD 115 that was remapped about 18months ago. The remap never really lived up to my expectations although the remappers quoted an additional 30-35Hp and about 20% additional torque. Yes it does seem to have a tad more grunt in 4th and 5th but it never give that 'wow' factor.

My friend has a Golf Tdi 130 which has loads more torque through all the gears. I know the Tdi has a 6 speed box with slightly closer ratios but this accounted for my Stilo does not come near.

Should a remapped JTD be comparable with a Tdi 130?

I have just started looking into possible problems that could contribute to sluggish performance (yeh I know its a bit late) such as air mass sensor to start with.

That 130 shouldn't be quicker than a remapped JTD, Who mapped it?

Has it been back to a Fiat garage since? may have ben re-set.

If you didn't notice the wow factor when it was re-mapped I woold question whether it was done at all.

I'd say there was something wrong if you didn't get the "Wow" factor even before it was remapped

Re: JTD versus VW Golf TDI 130?

did you notice any difference straight after the remap?

I could tell the difference in mine straight away and mine would leave a Golf 130 TDi for dead now

Re: JTD versus VW Golf TDI 130?

Ok Gents, thanks for your replies/Information.
It's time to start looking in a bit more detail to resolve the problem.

CPE (Congleton Performance Engineering) did the remap. Is there anyone out there with experience of them? Are there good or bad remaps?
In fairness to CPE, after I had the remap I called them cause I thought there should be more umpfh and they said 3rd to 5th gears you will notice the extra power and offered to 'give it a bit more' if I wanted. At the time I declined as I thought that there maybe something else causing the lack of grunt.
It might be related but I put this question on the forum previously - since I had the car I got what sounded like 'pinking' when accelerating under light load especially when cold and just audiable when hot.
I thought this might have something to do with lack of power, maybe the MAF sensor had gone out of calibration resulting in underfuelling. Last week finally got round to buying a replacement sensor off Ebay for £50, fitted it and the car black smoked under light acceleration and felt like occasionally 'missed' fire and of course - no extra power. I put the old one back on and have asked for a replacement as this one must be intermittently duff.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this noise? I am sure this is not standard and it could be affecting the power.

Re: JTD versus VW Golf TDI 130?

If your still unsure it might be worth having the car on a rolling road to give a readout of the power, normally costs around £30 i think.

I don't think the pinking noise is anything to worry about, mine makes a similar noise sometimes and mine is fine.

Lightbulb Re: JTD versus VW Golf TDI 130?

Be a lot cheaper to simply post something like a 40 - 80 figure wouldn't it (on flat, driver only, 4th gear)

I'm sure many mapped/unmapped JTD 115 members could then comment.

Re: JTD versus VW Golf TDI 130?

Mine makes the same pinking noise under power untill the revs build up. Hope it's not a cracked manifold.

Re: JTD versus VW Golf TDI 130?

Like the idea of 40-80 acceleration test. Will do this ASAP and will thread onto this...

Post Re: JTD versus VW Golf TDI 130?

Compare it to these times and you should beat them easy as mine is standard.

JTD115 5 door + driver only + full tank
3rd 40-80 9.9 secs
4th 40-80 15.2 secs
4th 50-100 23.5 secs

This is from a static start (not already accelerating)

Now make sure you do this on a private road wont you

Re: JTD versus VW Golf TDI 130?

@mrlovaman does the engine note change when ideling for a while and when under light acceleration do you notice a drop in power at certain revs as i had this problem a few months after my1st remap was told it was the mafchanged it but the problem came back after a couple of weeks, toook the car to chipped uk and r/road showed it was about 30hp down on what i was told it should produce they had a look at the map and said it wasall over the place put a new map on the car and have had no problems so far

Re: JTD versus VW Golf TDI 130?

At times (especially when cold) the Idle speed fluctuates. Has a similar effect like the aircon has been switched on when the rpm increases slightly to compensate for the extra load but then the rpm returns back to normal in about 5 secs. It was just the same before the remap as was the 'pinking'.

Back to the pinking noise - I just cant believe the noise ( or the level of noise mine makes) could have been regarded as normal by Fiat so I have to assume its a fault and get it fixed. Hope to get the replacement Maf sensor in a couple of days so I can continue playing. Also does anyone know where the air temp sensor is? There must be one that senses the air temperature that works with the Maf or is it part of the Maf assembly?

Re: JTD versus VW Golf TDI 130?

Here's another one for the Diesel Techies.....

If you recall from previous threads I bought a replacement Maf sensor last week in the hope to improve performance, fitted it and the car kangaroo'd and black smoked so I assumed it must be faulty and sent it back. Got the replacement yesterday, fitted it today and the car behaves same as last week and under light acceleration it kangaroo's puffing out black smoke on occasions. Hard acceleration and it behaves ok but does not pull quite as well as the original Maf.

Surely even with my crap luck 2 duff Mafs is pushing it a bit.....

If the new Maf is ok could this point to something else.....???

If I disconnect the Maf completely the car runs ok. I have done this with the original Maf and cannot really tell any difference in performance and behaviour connected or not.

Argonaught (NeumanR) suggested apart from Maf problems the EGR could be checked out. Appreciate any suggestions on how to check out the EGR (need more detail than that supplied by NeumanR)

To be honest now I am well confused.....

Will try the acceleration tests tomorrow.
