JTD Engine Fault - Rain related?

Driving home from girlfriend's parents today in the bloody terrible weather I got an "Engine Fault" message on the dash, with the warning light staying on all the way til I got home (150miles).

Started it again about an hour ago, everything's fine.

Reading the other threads about this fault it's probably water related, but I didn't experience any loss in power and I was getting normal motorway MPG. I got it up to 115mph in good weather yesterday

It's off to the garage on Wednesday anyway (still in 3rd year of warranty), so I'll let them look at it.

Is it likely to just be the rain or something more sinister.

Re: JTD Engine Fault - Rain related?

it maybe rain related the overboost valve, the symptoms are slightly different to mine, I get a loss of power and the light only stays on for a couple of seconds.

best thing to do is get the fault code read and that'll give you a better idea as to what it is.

And of course that 115mph was on a private circuit, I'm sure.

Re: JTD Engine Fault - Rain related?

Kind of on the subject, driving round today and splasssh went through a big puddle and yep you guessed it "engine fault" came on again when it gets upto around 3500rpm, doesn't do it all the time though.

I need to move the overboost valve onto the battery tray, but would I need a new overboost valve as well or would this one be fine as long as it doesn't get anymore water in it?

Three is the charm, happened to me this-morning. Always after a downpour and just as I am accelerating to get onto the motorway.

Okay, it's in the garage on weds, so I'll let them deal with it. Thanks for all your help.

Well, I couldn't see anyone else at the time, so it was fairly private! (To be fair it was the first and only time I'm likely to go this fast, I just wanted to see what the car could do.)

Well - it should do a lot better

.....and get that overboost valve moved (if not already up by battery)

It would have done, but there were 4 blokes and a full multiwagon boot. I lifted off because I couldn't see around the bend on the motorway. You never know what blue flashing lights are around corners

So, it's still not back from the garage, apparently it needs a new turbo and the warranty company are taking their time okay-ing it.

Am currently driving around in a Grande Punto, it's much nicer than i'd imagined, even if the dashboard does dig into my knee.

I'm not surprised they're taking their time.

If that's really the problem then it sounds like you've been very unlucky as don't remember anyone else ever posting about needing a new turbo

So long as they don't try to wriggle out of it somehow I don't mind. I just want it back and working

The warranty guys looked over it and okayed it today. Just waiting now to order the parts in and fit them. Should have it back on Thursday.

I'm still driving around in the Grande Punto, which is infinitely more chuckable than my MW.

(Touching wood) the people at Caledonia Manchester have been great so far.

Re: JTD Engine Fault - Rain related?

Had my MW comfortably up to 115mph, with 3 adults and 120litres of wine in the boot...... all perfectly legal on Autobahn in Germany. Boy did it feel good passing a few BMW 3 series without the worry of plod being around the corner.

Re: JTD Engine Fault - Rain related?

I had the same engine fault after driving through a huge puddle. It cleared itself in about 24 hours. The plastic tray under the engine has fallen off my multiwagon so maybe water got into something easier than it should have done! Since the power steering has failed, the climate control takes about 30 mins to get just a little warm, left front wheel bearing has gone and now the sun roof has packed in the plastic tray is the least of my problems. Car is just a few months out of warranty!

F*** me! I've just read the tip about resetting the sunroof and it works. I had called the Fiat dealer in Bootle and they couldnt help me except say I would have to bring it in. This forum is worth its weight in gold.
