Question Steering wheel

Which tool do I need to dismount air bag module on steering wheel?
There are 3 holes under wheel, eLearn shows 2 bolts, but nothing about tool? It's not easy to see inside this holes ...
I need to check contacts for CN+. Thanks in advance!

Thumbs up Re: Steering wheel

You are right rroope!
I found one problem in wiring for opening back windows on drivers side, one problem with wiring of CN+ (antenna) and I think there is a problem in wheel buttons, some of them are not working. This car was in salon 4 years (!) and it needs a time to start everything properly. Examiner shows 3 problems: CN, buttons, and something in truck (?! ).
Why I do it myself? Fiat service don't want to examine every contact, they only want to change (and charge) suspicion nodes. I already fixed few problems, why not more? Throttle valve (cleaning and greasing), air bag contacts (they wanted to change sit sensor), and other little things around. Forum helps me a lot, thanks.
Honestly, I like to do it myself like before on old cars.

If somebody knows ....

Re: Steering wheel

Removing the wheel and even the airbag is easy.

As soon as I can be bothered I'll post a proper "How to" (I've got pictures and everything!).

In brief:

If you're worried or a bit cack handed then disconnect the battery.

3 bolts hold the airbag in place. You'll need a T30 screwdriver/ratchet to unscrew them. Move the wheel 90 degrees left/right to get at the (straight ahead for the bottom one)

Carefully lift the airbag out. It will be connected by two wires with one green and one yellow connector. Remove the locking cover thing (difficult to explain without a picture) and the connector will come out easily. Virtually no force is required beyond a small flat headed screwdriver blade.

Airbag module is now free to remove

You should be able to see the connectors for the buttons and horn

Have fun!

PS If you're still having problems then badger me to get on with the guide!

Re: Steering wheel

Cris,
Thanks for the reassuring advice and particularly the Torx T30 advice no doubt I'll be doing this one day myself, though for now all my buttons are working well.

I've read that airbag systems often have power-storing capacitors. To be safe, I would disconnect the battery several hours (probably overnight) before removing any part of the airbag system - just to be on the safe side. If the airbag was to deploy while unplugging it, that would not be a pleasant experience.

Cheers,
-Alex

Thanks guys,
I'll try tomorrow or day after. I can disconnect battery for few hours before, to be sure about 'pleasant experience'!
Cleaning contacts is probably the same like every other: contact spray.
Cris, if you have some pictures guide, please send me, thanks.

I'll let you know about result.

Have to be big capacitors to hold charge over-night!

As a side point I've had mine off a couple of times with the battery connected. Not that I recommend it. Like booze and fags you make your own choice....

Ok, thanks, I'll do it during weekend, all the night off!

Re: Steering wheel

I did it during weekend. Not a big deal, only for the first time . I took off steering column trim, and found clock spring. It was a label on, which made me to see eLearn first. Are there some contacts (except connectors) which need to be cleaned? Probably I need to remove this clock spring first?
The most important is that first step is done.
Do you have any suggestions about future steps?

Re: Steering wheel

Read up on airbags before you think about tackling them. they are obviously explosive devices but people don't realise just how life threatening they are. They're not soft fluffy things like most people imagine, they expand at 200mph like a sledgehammer and they have to be already deflating when your head hits them otherwise it's like a brick thrown through your windscreen. That's why your face needs to be at least 12in away from the steering wheel so it can inflate and be already deflating in the microseconds before your head contacts it.

It's why there are more intelligent airbag systems to control deployment these days as they are a very dangerous, safety device. Most people get facial burns and bits in their eyes from the materials, dust and gases and it comes out at 200mph in microseconds. But if you're working on it at the time then there's no time to get out of the way, no warnings, no buzzers ........alive..... dead. Broken neck.

It'll break your thumbs off easily as people found who lazily hold the steering wheel by the centre spokes whilst driving

It's not quite so dangerous when you know what your doing but even then, technicians have been injured when systems fire when they shouldn't

Even after disconnecting the battery there's plenty of power stored in the airbag system to trigger the bags otherwise they wouldn't be able to go off in an impact with a dead battery

So read up, and if you are confident with what you're doing then fine, it's your look out. A step by step guide reminds me of old bomb disposal films "Did you hear me? I said move the blue wire, not remove the ........" line goes dead.
