| Worrying Break Scraping!! Hi all Apologies if this has already come up in conversation! Whenever I take my car out for a spin, for the first ten minutes or so the breaks make an awful grinding sound. It sounds to me like there's dirt between the blocks and the rims (I have 17" claw alloys), but I don't think that's the case. Once the car has been running for a while, the noise doesn't seem as bad (or maybe my music is just louder). Does anyone think this is just a case of the break blocks warming up for efficient use, or do you think I should get them checked? They never used to make this grinding sound, only in the last month or so! Cheers :) Bren J London Crystal Green 3dr Stilo 1.2 Active

I didn't immediately assume they must be worn though, as I've only had the car for 5 months from new, and have very rarely used any excessive braking. Why would the grinding stop completley once the car had been on the road for 5-10mins or so? :) Cheers Bren J London Crystal Green 3dr Stilo 1.2 Active

Thanks: 0 Trader Rating: (0) | Do you use the car everyday!? Do you live near the sea!? Could be just a little rust forming on the disk surface that is scrubbing off after the first mile or so! 53 plate, Stilo 3-door, Sassy grey, Alloys to follow, 1.2 Active, 5-Disc CD-Changer -- 45mpg!

| I don't live near the sea I'm afraid. Although I must admit the car can go for a few days without use, as I have to commute into London. I've found the problem to be there pretty much every morning though, even if the car was used late the night before! As you said, it does sound like there a "substance" on the disk that's effectively being worn away, but God knows what it could be [xx(] Bren J London Crystal Green 3dr Stilo 1.2 Active

| oh me gums! | sounds like its just the corrosion that forms on all brake discs overnight, dont know why but it seems more noticable on some cars more than others, not really much you can do if this is the case im afraid.still worth getting it checked though The Fiat Cinquecento Fun While It Runs

You may remember that I'm a weatherman by trade, and there's nothing more that I like than going out chasing severe weather (someone has too :p) Poor old Stilo has been through snow, storms, gales, hail and floods. Only last week it was pumelled by 10p size hailstones, and got within a mile of a tornado which wasted a small village in Oxfordshire. Think the elements may have a part to play in this grinding sound afterall..... Bren J London Crystal Green 3dr Stilo 1.2 Active
