What model is your Stilo? the sump capacity varies model to model. However I'd say go for a 4.5 or 5 litre bottle. Halfords are doing a special on Castrol GTX Magnatec at the minute. Buy 4.5l and get a 1l top up bottle, pouch, and gloves, wipes, card funnel etc free. GTX is what's going into mine tomorrow.

Make a decision as to whether your gonna go synthetic or mineral. Synthetic will last a little longer, but I wouldn't use it if you have any minor oil leaks as it tends to be a little thinner when cold. Semi-synthetic is always a safe bet. Have a look in your handbook to see what grade you should use. It will also tell you how much oil to use. Never over fill the damn thing.

Spoke to a mechanic this morning, and he reackons synth oil is a bit of a gimic unless it's going in a performance engine. I stuck the GTX Mag 10w-40 in this morning.

Fully synthetic is the way to go as long as your motor will take it. As Lobster has said if your engine’s worn or perhaps been abused then there's not much point using the more expensive oils (could even make leaks worse).

On the other hand if your engines is in tip top condition then fully synthetic will keep it that way

I certainly class my JTD as a performance engine

Surely viscositiy will determine if it leaks, not if its mineral or synthetic?

If I'm getting the oil done out of service I always use Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W-40 (which is semi synthetic), otherwise it gets Selenia from FIAT.

rroope, the interesting thing is I spoke to my service centre about oil, and they don't use selenia, they use shell. You have to question wether it's worth the extra fiver when even a Fiat service centre doesn't use it!

True - as long as it conforms to the API spec I suppose it's all good. I've always been a fan of selenia as both our Stilo's seem to burn non-Selenia oil; which of course there is no logical reason why.

When I get my service done at FIAT I usually get 10-15% off so I just let them put Selenia in . Like I say, I wouldn't buy it myself if I was doing it.

I did a full change yesterday and put 10w-40 GTX in, it's fine.

Fully synthetic oils tend to keep engines very clean and oil seals very pliable (I forget the technical term that describes how the oil does this).

It's this cleaning effect of the oil which can create leaks on older engines especially around existing seals. The other issue is that tolerances can only increase on an engine and never decrease. In other words there's little point in using the highest quality oil if the engines already taken on some wear.
