No prob mate it was genuine question I thought it may have fitted as well but loads of bits different ..bellhousing /position of starter motor etc would have been an interesting project though wouldnt it

Re: 6 speed gearbox transplant

Anything is possible.

I've fitted a Rover V8 in my Stag, needing engine to gearbox adaptor, new engine mounts, special exhaust manifolds, custom sump etc etc.

Just depends how worthwhile it is, does the expense / work justify the outcome ??

But didnt rover already do that on the stag so why bother with all the extra work when Rover did it for you you like a challenge then mate

Re: 6 speed gearbox transplant

No Rover didn't do it. No production Stag ever had the Rover V8 in it.
There are specialist who will supply all the parts to make the conversion very easy indeed. However, the price they charge for that ease of change is way too much.

I just used that as an example that anything is possible if you are prepared to work at it.

Re: 6 speed gearbox transplant

hang on, triumph did make stag V8s but didnt use the rover V8, they used their own design, which was turd...frankly.

Typical British Leyland, "we have a perfectly decent V8 we can use from rover, but triumph management team aint talking to rover management, so we'll make our own V8 that will be better and not based on a yank motor, I bet our triumph V8 will see off rover..."

Re: 6 speed gearbox transplant

Big Black Stilo

You are absolutely correct. All Stags were V8, but were 3 litre Triumph engined and not 3.5Litre Rover engined (Old Buick engine)

However, the problems with Stag V8 are now well and truly understood and can be totally avoided. Just at the time, was a major sticking point.

They do sound fantastic though, the timing of British V8s is different to US V8 - as a rule the firing order is different.

The Rover V8 is a very forgiving engine, as is easy to obtain with all service items easily available. Same sort of standard power output too.
