Stilo Key

Just thought I'd let people know my experience:

Car - 2002 1.8 Stilo Dynamic

Problem:-

Car Security Failure when trying to start car. This started once a month and is now at the point when it is everyday. Sometime it starts but passenger car door won't open and also sometimes I unlock the car and both Windows Open. (?!)

Solution According to Fiat (which cost £30 to find):-

The Key is faulty. I only have one key and so am buying a new one (probably wise anyway). Just so expensive!!

EDIT - Just returned from garage. They wanted £185 for a replacement key which included everything needed. I decided not to pay as that is a ridulous amount of money. Is there anywhere cheaper i can get it?

Re: Stilo Key

I was quoted 110, try different dealerships as price varies quite a bit

Re: Stilo Key

I thought I needed a new key because the metal in the groove on the blade had split out. I spoke to a local guy who could get keys done much cheaper than FIAT. Most places seem to have someone who can get keys. He also advised that in my case I just needed to get a new blade cut and fit it to the existing key as the electronics were OK. It sounds like you may need a new key but I would try cleaning all the contacts, make sure nothing is shorting and that the battery is OK.
I sometimes find that my sunroof opens up if my key is in my pocket and I sit or crouch down - bit of a bastard when its pouring down

That's a classic. Had that the other day when checking tyre pressures in the rain

Re: Stilo Key

I have found that if I manually lock the car I have no "Car Security Warnings" (well for the last 3 days).

It sounds like you may need a new key but I would try cleaning all the contacts, make sure nothing is shorting and that the battery is OK.
Are you referring to the key fob? How do you open it?

Thanks for all the suggestions

Re: Stilo Key

To replace the battery, flick key blade out and move slot on screw behind where blade rests to the 'unlock' position then prise out the section of the key with the screw in which holds the battrery - CR2032 @ less than 2 quid from Tescos

As a guide, chap at work recently got quoted 120 for 3 button key for a SEAT Toledo, supplied and programmed to ther car from a local Seat Dealer. Would shop around Fiat dealers and see if you can get a better price...

EDIT - I have now been told by Fiat that it is a faulty BCU. They advised that the key I have is intermittent and the new key is sending a signal everytime. Therefore i needed a new key and a new BCU. Cost = £390 for both (which includes VAT and labour).

I have found somewhere in Pontypridd ("Jeff")that can reprogram BCU's and also somewhere in Tredegar (Parker's)that can get new Stilo Keys (non remote version) supplied and programmed for £50-ish.
