stilo as a company car

Hello Stilo friends

quick question how many miles do you think a 1.6 16v stilo is good for until you start having real problems with the engine , thinking of using mine as a company car and taking the allowance from the company its 2 year old and done 20k second service is due in 4 weeks and its in mint condition will only use it for motorway miles , any one got a high miler , really like the car and very comfy with a arm rest , do you think im mad or would you agree ill get another two years out of it without any bother , will probably do 25k-30k a year please let me know your opinions

Re: stilo as a company car

Should be fine especially if it's motorway miles, just keep some spare coil packs in the car

You can comfortably get well over 100,000 miles from a 1.6 if it's looked after.

Re: stilo as a company car

Mine's used daily and on 53K and has only worn out 3 coils,
Yes carry spare coils in the boot
Watch your front tyres for signs of initial tracking setting out but once sorted you should be fine

Re: stilo as a company car

its what gives the spark to the spark plugs.
basically on the stilo there is one per cylinder so in your 4 cylinder car you have 4.
there a known isuue with one brand(cant recall the name)so have been a problem for a lot of stilo owners.
easy to replace and if you carry a spare the breakdown guy can fit it

Re: stilo as a company car

coil pack, it's what gives your sparkplugs enough power to spark.

This is a coil pack- a pack of coils and very expensive they are too!

1.6 Stilo has coils- individual coils - one for each cylinder like this and you'd be wise to carry two spare in your boot

Re: stilo as a company car

They cost about £40 from Fiat and can be fitted in about 3 1/2 minutes or so, once you have decided which one is busted.

Engines should last easily 100k without durability issues, as long as they are maintained. I am not sure why 100k is any sort of benchmark anymore though. This goes for all engines, not just Fiat or 1.6.

Re: stilo as a company car

Related to this, do we know if it's just one brand of coils that give problems? I noticed that mine are Bosch so I'd like to think they can be trusted for a while

Re: stilo as a company car

Isn't it SAGEM that are the rogue brand?

Yet when I came to replace mine the other day, I am sure I had 4 BOSCH in there [plus one other brand that was replaced last year] - so looks like I had a BOSCH failure at 50000 miles; let me confirm later on, when I pop the bonnet again.

Re: stilo as a company car

The 3 that have failed in mine are all Sagem.

Determination of which coil is bust can be done by disconnecting each coil in turn. When you disconnect the bad one, no change in engine revs or engine noise will be detected. Disconnecting any other will cause the engine to run very poorly, and it may even shake a little.

After that, it is one 10mm screw, pull off the defective coil and re-fit the new. (Then have a moan at Fiat, just to get it off your chest)

Question Re: stilo as a company car

I think it's fair to say that any make of coil will struggle to survive in the stupid environment it's been put in (pretty much hottest part of the engine).

VW made the same mistake as Fiat and had to sort out a lot of reliability issues due to this. I gather they've dropped the idea in more recent designs.

Anyone know if Fiat have made changes to the GP in this area?

Re: stilo as a company car

Yes i don't think there's much between whatever coil you use. At 50k miles you're pushing the lifespan of an over plug coil. All that thermo cycling of 100 degrees C is enough for any piece of plastic insulation
