(T) CV joints-tech help?

Ok, On the front theres been a knocking on what i thought was the suspension/anti roll, which has been checked and everything is A-ok.

The other day in an emergency stop (kids running across the M65), I had a loud clunk/bang from the front (it wasnt a kid) as i was coming to a stop

Now the car sounds a bit meatier through the revs, thinking it was the exhaust, had it checked, everythings fine, and its not meaty when stood still.

Then driving home today i noticed the noise went when i turned right. Just having a new diff/gearbox in- i naturally am fearing the worst BUT I have been told by someone it could be CV joints/splines that have gone, and that could be causing the noise i have and the effect (ie going when turning right)- and crucially the yet to be identified rattling/banging underneath the front.

What d'ya y'all reckon? if it is CV joints- whats going to be the financial damage?

Worn CV joints tend to be "knock on lock" i.e. a multiple knocking sound when on full lock. Doesn't sound like your symptoms

The fact the noise lessens when turning to right lock suggests driver's side wheel bearings. As they may have disturbed these to change gbox then I'd look over there for hub nut problems. All depends if the "meaty sound" is like wheel bearings. As you say it doesn't do it when stationary then try coasting downhill and see if its wheel rotation or engine causing the noise.

Does it lessen/worsen when you apply brakes?

Horrible thought but say your wheel hub nut came loose or snapped with the emergency stop, that might cause the bang then you have loose wheel bearings which will cause the noise with speed but not stationary and will quieten as you turn right

The fact you've had work done in that area recently then i'd take it back pronto and express your desire for a check over. Entering the showroom having a grip of 6 yellow candles in your belt with a wire attached and muttering "Imshallah" etc seems to work well for that caring and personal service

I dont know if you are aware of the fact Decks but Dan has had a rather nasty accident in his stilo [see pic of his car in the thread lets see them stilo's]and I am beginning to wonder if all the faults and problems that he is now having is a result of that bump it happened to me when I was 18 and I dont think that car should have been rebuilt

Seriously though BBS, it sounds like Deck's hubnut theory could be the one, especially considering the load involved when emergency braking from high speed.

Hope you get it sorted soon (and inexpensively) mate.

I think I may have a problem with my CV joints going to have it checked out on saturday.

I get a clonking noise when putting your foot on/off the gas pedal and when changing gear, i'll keep you posted though as to what it is

BBS have an accident? Surely not, the man drives like a saint

Yep he put up a pic of his car and it was badly damaged I had a head on when I was 18 and only been on the road for 6months at the time and that car should have never been rebuilt everything started to go wrong when it was back on the road. BBS has had a cataloge of problems since his accident

Maybe he's car is all body and frame missaligned?

There you go one very bent stilo quite often things go wrong after an accident like this unless the repairer is very thorough which they quite often aren't Thankyou Arthos for the pic

Hmmmm... yes it was looking in a sorry state back then.

Sorry not been on to reply- been very busy at work with a project and not had chance to come on here.

I was assured by the insurers assessor and the repair centre that the structure of the car wasnt affected by the shunt, and it looks worse than it was as most of the missing bits/damage are plastic body panels.

Back to the noise though. I have taken the car to a couple of people as I dont want to go to the dealer again just yet, and it could be the drop links afterall.

The noise isnt there when free-wheeling either in gear, or out, clutch up or down. Its only when the engine is under load and its regardless of speed, so whether your in 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th or 6th it always comes on about 1800rpm, 2300rpm, 2700rpm and 3500rpm. This to me is now sounding like a vibration more than anything.

The drop links are buggered, after i was told they werent, and this accounts for the knocking noise and thumping. I have been told this may be causing the wheels to be sat incorrectly and putting strain on other parts to cause my noise- and the original bang was them degrading more. The other place said they are buggered and causing a vibration on the anti-roll system/steering.

The noise has moved now to only making it on a left turn- any left turn. so dead straight is quiet, turning right is quiet, but nudge the wheel slightly left when going straight, and on it comes!

Been told to start with the drop links as there the cheapest thing to replace. going to go get two from partco today-only £11 and i think i can do it myself. is this an easy job?

Glad to see you back and posting Dan the links are an easy job to do its just undoing to nuts one on the strut and the other on the anti rollbar the problem is [and there always is ] these tend to seize on so undoing them becomes a war of 4 letter words I had to resort to using my angle grinder in the end to get the blighters off I wouldn't recommend you even attempt it the bottom one gives you very little space to get the grinder in there and its near the CV boot

I posess 1 mear socket set- am I likely to struggle?

Ordered the parts, in tomorrow £10.56+VAT- lets hope its not raining tomorrow, i can stand working on cars in the cold but not the rain/damp

It's well worth spraying the nuts with penetrating fluid a day or so before you do the job rather than being in a hurry to get it done with.
