Is my driveshaft had it?

I'm getting a clunking noise when accelerating/deccelerating and changing gear which really is the same thing, it sounds like 2 metal parts hitting together.

also when i took my wheels off and spun the discs from side to side it makes a similar clunking noise then, haven't heard of many driveshafts going on Stilo's could it be that on mine though?

EDIT: I know I put Is instead of *Has on the title but I can't change it, i've had a long day at work

Re: Is my driveshaft had it?

cant say it was excatly the same but i was getting a clicking noise, that sounded like to metal parts rubbing together and when i took the wheel off, i could here the clicking but couldn't located it? But then i found it was the gaurd on the rear of the brake disk,as suggested in this thread: http://www.fiatforum.com/stilo-techn...ide-wheel.html

Also a suggestion in there how to test to see if your driveshafts are going?

Re: Is my driveshaft had it?

Right so I've put it off for a while and I've done a video here http://www.fiatforum.com/gallery/data/500/MOV00025.3gp not a very good one i know but thats the sound i'm getting when putting my foot on/off the accelerator, and theres about just under an inch play when spinning the discs as you can kind of see in the video.

Any ideas?

Re: Is my driveshaft had it?

I reckon with a bit of practice you could play tune with that

Quite a bit of play there although a fair bit of it might be taken up by the diff.

I'm sure one of the techies will be along soon to give the definitive bad news

Yes that's correct and a lot of early mini's had it also what happens is the splines on the shaft wears and you get play there clonks when you accelerate and deaccelerate quickest fix is exchange shaft if you dont want to rebuild it or maybe pick one up from brakers parts on the shelf are usually checked and will be a lot cheaper than new

Re: Is my driveshaft had it?

You'd need to find out which one it is, inner or outer CV joint. Put your hand on each whilst someone rocks and rotates the wheel in gear 1, you'll soon feel where the knocking is
Do you have lowered suspension by any chance?

Re: Is my driveshaft had it?

How did you solve that problem? I have the same noise, but if i put the car into neutral gear i don't have that noise so i hope it's not something with the gearbox or what.

Re: Is my driveshaft had it?

Nope didn't solve it.

2 FIAT mechanics couldn't hear a noise so i took it to an independant who could hear the noise but he said he didn't know what it was, he checked over the car but couldn't find anything wrong

My fiat mechanic told me that this knocking is caused by some bearing in differencial and that all stilo diesels have that (bull****). But here is xxx's stilos diesels and only me and you have that problem? lol.

Re: Is my driveshaft had it?

I had a vibration when I bought the current Faultiwagon, had the wheels balanced 3 times and swapped about but it didnt sort the issue. Had the car looked at a Fiat Specialist and it was diagnosed as a dead drive shaft.

The car has 53k on the clock, the car was very noisy and shuck like mad under load and the vobration lessened but didnt go away when coasting.

Cost £380 all in, I didnt pay for this though as the fault was there when I baought the car.. the bad thing is the car was sat in the garage for nearly 3 weeks while the driveres side drive shaft came over from Italy!
