Re: Replacing Rear Brake Pads

Ok, folks, I've read all the stuff about changing the rear brake pads and which tool I need to get. I've been quoted about £40 for discs and pads, and £10 for the wind back tool. A lot better than £120 at a local brakes, exhausts, etc, type centre. I've got the new discs fitted, the pads are in and I'm ready to put the caliper back on. Do the pistons simply re-seat themselves once it's all together again? I've done my front discs and pads, that was fun, undoing the bolts holding the caliper on! They were rock solid! I pulled muscles I didn't know I had that day! Anyway, advice please. Thanks

Stilo 115 JTD, 5door, Scilla Red, with 76k on the clock and ready for a BIG service. (£650 locally!!!!)

Re: Replacing Rear Brake Pads

you have to wind the pistons into the calliper using the tool, then after all refitted, pressing the brake pedal will push them back out so pads are touching the discs.

Hope this answers what you were asking?

Cool Re: Replacing Rear Brake Pads

As Minimad said you have to wind in the pistons on the caliper on each side the [passenger side] anti clock wise and the [drivers side clockwise using the tool or what ever way you are going to use when you have the piston in the caliper wound back in you will see that the rear pad has little up stands that slot into the piston face [which have recesses] if my memory serves me well as I did it some time ago now ..you should be able to work it out from there

Re: Replacing Rear Brake Pads

one garage told me if the pads are really worn, the piston can jam out meaning new callipers required- is this the case or just a scare story?

Never seen it mentioned here

Re: Replacing Rear Brake Pads

Scare story I think you'll find. You'd have said goodbye to your discs long ago anyway

Yeah, as Argonought said... scare story... mind you this sort of thing does happen with severely-neglected brakes so it may be based on fact, maybe with another make/model. I remember many years ago seeing a Honda Accord where the front discs were both worn through to the vents. The owner/drivers finally complained of an odd noise - the pad bumping in and out! This is with the pads long since down to the metal.

I've changed a few down-to-the-metal pads but, strangely enough, never in my own cars. I'd hope that most people would pay just a little attention to such things :shakehead It doesn't take much - one or two checks a year...

Cool Re: Replacing Rear Brake Pads

Cant quote for parts but I would give them around two and a half hours labour on top of the bits ..you can get a rough idea of disks and pads from ebay ..be warned though the mintex pads squeel like a stuffed pig if your getting those ..discs are very good quality tho another good alternative are ebc and you should be able to get those from any decent motor factors and online
