They should have been in the box with the front pads as well go back to the supplier and check it out get him to open up another box

Re: Rear Brake Pads

Well I've just put Mintex on the back of the 1.6(5dr) and adjusted the handbrake cable as per FIAT's instructions, and it's so much better! Even my "It's only a car" mother agrees! The caliper-piston windback tool is great too, although the bolts are far too long, so you really need to hold it in place at the piston too.

Job for tomorrow; fit new pads and discs to the front of mine. Going to do my rear brakes in the week.

If the thrust bolts are far to long then shorten them

Re: Rear Brake Pads

They seemed fine when I did mine

Only problem I had was with the locking bolt (had to fit a shorter one)

Tell me RROOPE, does the handbrake cable need adjusting as a matter of routine when the rear pads are changed? And could you tell us what "FIAT's instructions" are for doing this? Cheers

FIAT's Instructions say to adjust the handbrake as part of the procedure of replacing the rear brakes, which I followed, and was well worth it. Access to the adjustment nut is a bit of a nightmare, so I'll post up my version of the procedure later today.

Re: Replacing Rear Brake Pads

This is true as it makes winding back the pistons easier.

However, you can do it without adjusting the handbrake cable as long as you make sure the handbrake is completely off. The handbrake is fully auto adjusting so even when moving from worn to new pads it will still find near enough the correct position.

Quite important to keep an eye on the brake fluid reservoir though as it's likely to overflow if you're not careful.

Re: Replacing Rear Brake Pads

Disaster strikes . . .

Went to do my rear brakes today (then apart from fluid change all the brakes on both our Stilos are done ), did the drivers one no problem. Went to do the rear passenger, started winding the piston in, then without warning . . . SNAP.

Eeek, so i took the tool out and it had snapped around the hole where the grub screw goes in. Now I'm left with a Stilo with no handbrake!

Phoned the parts guy just now (2:15pm) who said, and I quote, "Those tools are sh!t anyway", and he's put another one on VOR (Vehicle Off Road). It's coming from Italy, will be in the UK at 0430 this morning, then at the dealer for 0900. Got to say, from Italy to Paignton in under 19 hours, not bad!

That's rubbish.

I ordered mine (have actually ordered 2 now) from a local Fiat specialist and they're not even a dealer let alone a main agent.

Re: Replacing Rear Brake Pads

Several members have used it OK but in my view not a patch on the proper Fiat tool
