| Its all about torque!! | Im told many fasinatin stories as to why diesils cant have in duction kits, one of which is the air sensor, get clogged up wiv oil too easily is this true? another was that the air flow would b too much for a diesil again is this true? cos wen i had the headlights out today i cud clearly see my air filter box, and how to remove it and a nice induction kit wud fit very neatly in there and hopefully give my car a nice purr to it! i've tried searchin the threads n cum up wiv nuthin, still dont really kno how this site works completely so u guys can try but i think its gonna b real head smashin material Thanx again every body, even if you do cum up wiv nuthin, its better than wot i got!

| Re: Ok guys i need sum head on this one!! Common rail diesels are THE easiest engine to tune, far easier than petrols. The thing you have to do, is to get more fuel injected - simple really. The only limit is the hardware. Anything that gets more mass of air into the power cylinder is going to have an effect on power output. This is exactly why the turbo and intercooler are there. Easing the intake should help. Sensors are fitted to all cars these days, so shouldn't clog up more quickly on diesel cars?? (don't know why folks have said that). In fact you need the sensor to measure the increased mass flow of air, so more fuel is injected. I would go ahead, fit the induction kit, then if you want more power (and can afford it) go for a re-map. I am not sure what the kit would do on its own. It may be just as effective if you de-restrict the standard air take system. Any engine needs to breath properly, it's the first thing to do.

| Re: Ok guys i need sum head on this one!! Diesel engine design follows the same principles as does petrol engine designs with the only difference that the Diesel is ignited by compression heat. Physics doesn't change flow dynamics just for Diesels. On modern Turbo Diesel engines it is as easy to up the power as it is on petrol engines with forced induction by just remapping the ECU. Naturally everyone wants to maximise the power increase at the lowest financial input. This is where the mapping is the most effective way to gain power. But this is hardly the engineering solution. As mentioned further up the thread, induction improvements show a difference. These aren't initially significant because a big hike in power can be gained simply because of the fact that the potential of the engine isn't used in the first place. Eventually the brick wall will be hit and this is the time where induction improvements alongside other measures (porting, flowing, vlaves, cams, exhaust) move the barriers making it possible to inject safely more fuel due to the improved airflow. Also it should be remembered that the forced induction system has got to work harder too to get air into the engine when airflow is restricted between induction and exhaust, destroying potentially gains.

| Re: Ok guys i need sum head on this one!! We fit around 6-7 induction kits per week on diesel cars, some are more efficient and easier to install than others and some quite simply do not require them, the Stilo JTD being one of them. With the Stilo, you are wasting your money on an induction kit unless you are going to make a hge amount of expensive other changes as Peter elluded to above. Basically, we limit the power increase on the remap to suit the Stilo. We can go much higher than the 160bhp we usually put on but becuase of certain other influences we do not go higher. Therefore what is the point in spending money on an expensive induction kit to gain more power when the power is being limited anyway. Of the 100+ Stilo JTD we have tuned, only 2 have induction kits - becuase the owners simply had to have one! Upshot is, have an ECU remap done to release safe power on a Stilo JTD if you are on a -£1000 budget, if you are going to spend more than £1000 then go for an induction kit, manifold, sports cat and then get it mapped. We have done this on JTD's and they can be very good indeed :-D. A good tuning company won't try and sell you something that you simply don't need to make a buck. A simple free flowing air filter will give you enough air flow to improve the throttle response on these. On a lot of engines, such as the 2.4 JTD's and the 1.9TDi etc we fit a large number of CDA's then we map the ECU to utilise the additional airflow. On the 2.4 JTD for example this is producing a strong (yet again limited!!!*) 328lb ft torque and 207bhp from the basic "140" enigne, and no smoke, progressive power input and longevity. *We did have 380lb ft going through a 2.4 JTD at one point, only it erm... didn't like it and we were down at Magny Cours and erm had to hire a car to get back :-D Of course if you only want a relatively small power increase and you want something visual then an induction kit on its own is the way to go on these and should not cost you more than £180 for the most expensive if you want to fit it yourself - but for an extra £120...why not go .... ah decisions decisions.
