Question 1.6 MAP Sensor?

Hi Peeps

Again, I am in need of some advice. I have a 1.6 Stilo which in my opinion is not producing it's best performance, with the accelerator to the floor in 5th gear and on an even road surface, I get no more than 3000rpm, I suspect something is up.

My dealer has checked with examiner and there are no fault codes stored and they say that they can't find anything wrong, I also know they haven't road tested it as the mileage was only a couple miles above when handed in.

After reading some stuff here, it seems as tho perhaps the MAF/MAP is not working correctly, I see some have been brave to remove it and clean/replace it and it seems to cure a number is similar issues.

If I was to remove it, what is best to clean it with, I've called Halfords and they don't have any Carb cleaner, Maplin stock Electrical Contact cleaner (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...eaner&doy=20m6) would this suffice ?

The engine does rev well past 3000rpm when in idle and in lower gears, just not in 4th or 5th. New Bosch Super 4s were installed a week back as was a new air filter.

Is there anything else I could/should check at the same time ?

Thanks for listening

Cheers

Have strong headwinds down your way do they?

If your air filter is good (and you're not towing a caravan) then something's strangling it. Can't do much with a MAP sensor as it's a pressure sensor like the wall barometer but as expensive as an anitique roadshow one at £100. Could just make sure the connections are ok. Most likely needing the MAP sensor update only available at Tescos.. sorry..... Fiat

re: 1.6 MAP Sensor?

Thanks for the reply.

Picture this, driving a long a straigh even road, in 3rd gear @ 4000rpm speed climbs to say 45mph, then switch to 4th, suddenly rpm drop to just over 2000 and speed increase to 65 takes a further 15 seconds, go to 5th and rpm doesn't change, speed increase to 75-80 takes another 25-20 seconds.

I know from my previous Stilo that this is not normal behavior from this engine, I was able to accelerate in 5th gear from say 70mph to dare I say it 90mph in only 10 seconds and the rpm would be in the region of 4000rpm. It's also fair to say that this car should not need to be driven in 3rd gear on the motorway to be able to reach higher speeds to keep up with other road users. If I use my cruise control whilst in 5th I notice a slight shuddering during acceleration.

I've spoken to 2 Fiat dealerships who both have run Examiner on it and as there are no "Fault Codes" they are not interested in doing a road test and I've been told that no updates to the car are necessary.

It's going back to get a new starter motor, fan belt, altenator belt etc fitted next week as they are failing, they promise to look at this again.

As the condition of the Air Filter which was removed 10 days ago was very poor, a tech has suggested that the MAP sensor has become dirty. I'm going to pop into Halfords tomorrow to get some carb cleaner and I will attempt to clean and refit and road test to see if any difference is obtained.

Thanks for listening.

re: 1.6 MAP Sensor?

Pressure sensor would probably have a few traces of oil on it but thats it,its a pressure sensor so no real gain by cleaning it,also a code will be logged.
From what you describe the double update(map sensor/throttle body)is the way to go first.

re: 1.6 MAP Sensor?

Thanks for the reply.

I'm sure I read someone here "cleaned" theirs and it resolved similar issues, of course it may have been a connection issue.

I shall call my local dealer again tomorrow and quiz them over this update as they have already said none is available.

Do you recommend any garage in the Paisley/Glasgow area ?

MAP - Now It's The Brakes

UPDATE :

As I write this I am waiting for a recovery vehicle to come and collect my car. Went to turn it on and got "ABS Failure" "ASR Failure" "Stop Engine" and many beeps. Turned off engine, waited a min, started up again and no error, so took for a test drive and noticed that the "pulling" I get to the left is worse and now getting a metal scraping noise from brakes.

Called Garage who say "please don't drive your car, it's not safe" and have now been advised that this may have been the issue all along with the poor performance I get in higher gears, tech's advice is that the brakes were not disengaging correctly and were permanantly "rubbing" hence why in higher gears the engine does not perform as well. This might explain why I have had to clean the brake dust from my alloys every week as they get covered in it.

Will post update when garage gets back to me.

A quick update to this thread my stilo went into Fiat for the first time this morning for a Flash /throttle body & ECU updates everything was A OK but there was a code logged that was the cause of my engine management light rearing its ugly head again and this was PO 204 No 4 cylinder injector [intermittent]the actual wording on the diagnostic report reads Po204-Cylinder 4 injector-S.C. to+Batt.V. what ever that means they also put out my service light [on my request]and replaced one parcel shelf support clip on drivers side the car was road tested and no fault recurred total cost was £44

re: 1.6 MAP Sensor?

Hi thanks for the info.

My car was taken to Reg Vardy little over 3 weeks ago to have an air con pipe replaced and to replace a sensor in 1 of the seats which was giving the Airbag failure warning light.

When I reported these performance issues to them they said that there was no errors found for the engine, only for the Airbag.

My car is currently in the garage it was booked to go into next week to have a new starter motor, alternator belt, fan belt and central locking switched replaced, they have now said they suspect the ABS/ASR Failure is down to an eletrical issue that as of yet they're still investigating.

My question would be, if the alternator was failing, what symptoms would I have, apart from suspect battery power ? Does the alternator have anything to do with the running of the engine itself ?

Forgive my ignorance, I don't even understand my petrol mower, let alone a car as advanced as this.

re: 1.6 MAP Sensor?

Update :

Seems I have fixed it myself, having removed the connector to the sensor in question, I did notice it wasn't fully inserted, maybe loose.

Drove it at the weekend in 4th gear and achieved 4500rpm and has made a noticeable difference to 5th, cruise control also isn't so "sticky".

Going to make sure that the various "updates" are applied tomorrow when it goes in for some other work.

Thanks to all who replied.
