Ignition Coils

My engine has started to misfire on my 1.6 dynamic and the engine warning light comes on intermitently. This happend a couple of months ago and I was told that an Ignition Coil had failed. The simptoms are exactly the same this time but I have decided to save the £85 it cost last time and do the job myself.

Can anyone give me a quick 'how to' guide/advise and what tools do I need?

thanks

Ian.

Re: Ignition Coils

If an ignition coil has failed, you shouldn't be driving the car - it can cause damage to your CAT due to unburnt fuel getting through....

Quite an easy job to do - do you know which cylinder it is?

Re: Ignition Coils

No I don't know which cylinder it is, I was planning to check them one by one until I find which coil it is.

thanks

Ian

Re: Ignition Coils

Yep, unless you got a spark tester, I suppose you could just release each pack and work it out by trial and error [well, thats what the AA man did when mine went ]

With most modern fuel injection systems 2000> EOBD especially, if a coil goes down the ecu will also cut that cylinder injector as well to prevent unburnt fuel going through to the cat - clever that.

On the 1.6 engine you will need a 10mm socket and rachet.
Take the 4x nuts for the engine cover off and remove- watch out for the washers.
You'll be able to see the coils now- they are bolted down with 1x 10mm bolt.
its a straight swap once you've found out which one is at fault.
