Alternator failure

Driving on the motorway tonight at about 60 mph when up flashes alternator failure with the battery light flashing too it then goes off then on periodicially at no set intervals goes on and off about 20 times. I Stop and start the car it does it again a few times. I filled up with fuel to a full tank then restet the trip. I drove about for 10 mins and haven't had it come on since.

I checked the battery and the indicator is green which suggests the battery is OK. I've had a few weird messages over the years but this is a new one!

Could this be another typical Stilo electrical glitch or could it be an alternator failure indeed. car is now typically out of warranty but only done 25k miles and used daily.

Anyone any thoughts or had this one?

I don't want to take it to the dealer and get hit with a £60 examiner fee then for them to find no fault. On the other hand I'm not around next week I don't want the girfreind to get stuck if it breaks down!

Cheers

Re: Alternator failure

These random warning messages are a scream aren't they. I had "rear number plate bulb u/s" Wow! How useful. Without doing anything the message no longer appears, These cars fix themselves! How cool is that?

Anyway, 25k is very low mileage to have problems with an alternator. I 'd just check your alternator output across the battery as normal with a voltmeter. If the voltage is good, say 14 volts with everything switched on lights, h rear screen etc then it's working ok

Fool it by changing the date back to yesterday when it was working all right

funny thing is it would probably work!

A mate has a voltmeter i may give him a shout. That's good to know about the expected voltage on a working alternator. Cheers for that.
