Re: Help!!!! misfire problem!!

Don't drive it. (full stop). Backfiring isn't good for the CAT, and you don't want fuel detonating in the CAT and then costing your £££ on a new CAT. Get it towed to the garage and tell them you don't want it back until its fixed, and you also want the CAT verified as being ok!

Re: Help!!!! misfire problem!!

It's got to be said, did you change the right one? How did you check which one was causing the grief? Is it a spark plug? Did you take the plugs out? Are all the connectors on properly?

Cats can take a lot more grief than the scribes would have us believe. An occasional misfire won't do any harm and even an engine not starting and flooding it with fuel has proven to not do any lasting damage. Cats more often die of old age, physical damage or breaking up. Now sticking diesel in your car is pushing your luck a bit but otherwise they're pretty robust

Re: Help!!!! misfire problem!!

I agree with Deckchair5 I would check plugs & leads before anything else & the airfilter & air flow meter.

Re: Help!!!! misfire problem!!

Mine was coughing and spluttering - they replaced all the spark plugs and that fixed the problem for about 2 weeks. When it happened again, they diagnosed a faulty coil and replaced it.

Sorry - probably not too much help in solving your particular problem - but some background info anyway...

Re: Help!!!! misfire problem!!

I used to have this problem with my Megane (not anymore mind you) They changed the coils, leads etc. and it was still doing it. Eventually, they had it for 6 days and had to replace the entire engine wiring loom! Joke.

Not much help, but it proves that it can be caused by a lot of different things.

Re: Help!!!! misfire problem!!

The 1.6 has four coils fitted directly over the plugs The way to diagnose if its a cylinder or plug fault or a coil fault is to move the coils position, If the misfire moves the fault is the coil, if the misfire doesnt its a cylinder specific problem (probably plug). Either way if you have a misfire I would change the plugs as they get coated when misfiring and dont always recover. As stated earlier catalytic converters on Fiats are very tough and I can honestly say I have changed 4 in 8 years due to failure. Also sometimes if you get a coil go down it spikes the efi ecu, and produces an injector error. It could be the ecu has stopped firing that injector to protect the engine, so a trip to the dealer may be required.
Good luck.
