New Tyres?

Hi
I need a pair of new tyres for the back of my 2002 JTD 3 door.

Any recommendations or brands to avoid? I've just been checking out mytyres.co.uk and it is abit daunting, too many to choose from. I do 500 miles a week so durability is more important than grip. So far i've had no problems with uneven tyre wear, I think the 1st owner got that sorted before I bought it in Oct 04.

Currently I have Firehawks fitted all round by the previuos owner.

Cheers

Neil

Re: New Tyres?

Hi

I am currently on 4 Bridgestone RE04s - am well pleased with them, better than my Pirellis - BUT it does depend on how you drive.

Re: New Tyres?

Firestone firehawks are one of the best mid-range tyres you can buy. might as well stick with 'em.

Re: New Tyres?

Do you have any problems with getting tyre shops to fit tyres for you that you've had delivered from tyre web shops?

Re: New Tyres?

I work in the motor trade so I don't have any problems of that sort. Besides I can get my tyres cheaper than any internet supplier.

This is the first time that I've ever considered getting tyres despatched to me by post as they seem not only cheaper but much better choice. So does anyone have trouble getting tyre fitters to fit and balance them? The web tyre dealers quote that it should be something like £12 per wheel for alloys at a local tyre dealer so just wondered if others are experiencing any problems.

The savings seem well worthwhile, rather than £100+ per tyre if bought at local tyre shop it seems that you could shod the whole car, 4 tyres for £200-250 with a tyre of your choice plus fitting costs

Re: New Tyres?

I have a local guy in the village who would fit/balance my tyres at £10 per corner.

Have you actually spoken to your local garage?

I've had quite a few tyres delivered over the years from mytyres.co.uk and am friendly with my local branch of National Tyres. They never flinched when I first brought 4 tyres to be fitted there - charged me about £8.95/wheel, IIRC.

Nowadays, though, I just take the online price printout from mytyres.co.uk and they'll either price-match or make it very close, avoiding the minor hassle of having them delivered to your house. They know I can get them cheap, so I basically say to them, "It's up to you - if you want to match these prices, I'll buy them from you. If not, I'll just order them and bring them here to be fitted !"

Re: New Tyres?

That's handy to know Niel. I can't see the local tyre shop giving the 50% off that's possible on the net but I'm willing to give it a try!

Re: New Tyres?

Getting local price dealers to drop their prices is relatively - just walk away if needed. I was offered 4 news tyres at around £115 per tyre - 2 needed doing that day, 1 was on the verge, the other had about 1000 miles left on it, so they said 'buy all 4 for £85 per piece' - suited me

Re: New Tyres?

Cheers Stuart. Yes, It's surprising the deals the tyre shops will do for all 4 tyres being changed, certainly worth asking

Re: New Tyres?

i have found etyres to be good and if you call them you my get a bit more off. The free punture repair service is good and handy having them come to your home or work to do the job.

Michelin are usually the hardest wearing tyre with good characteristics throughout their life.
