(T) Piston Slap!!!!

My engine rattles like a diesel when I start it after being left for a short time (minutes to a couple of hours).

My dealer say it may be a variator or, more seriously, piston slap??

When left overnight it starts quietley. Has anyone experienced similar and what was the outcome?

My Punto did that it was because I'd let the oil run right down! Put in 2 litres noise gone.

Yours probably isnt that simple, but I thought mine sounded terrible & had a major problem!

Mine used to make that noise and it was the variator. This was fixed under 3rd year warranty by my dealer, never heard it again.
I doubt it would be piston slap.

an oldish thread on the same if not a similar sounding noise http://www.fiatforum.com/stilo/5488-screech-scrape-noise-engine-bay-startup.html I did have a diesel sounding noise from my 1.8 when it was left longer than a few hours/over night, after starting you could hear the rattle for say 10-20 seconds then it was as quiet as normal.

as to a resolutio I didnt get to the point that it was fixed like pugwash's as I bought an Abarth instead.

If you have a 1.6. 2002 made before mai, you can be sure it is piston slap. I have repaired my two stilos from priston slap. Shame on Fiat not recalling this productions!!!

Hi, i have a 1.6 2003 stilo which as piston slap from cold. Most Fiats including Punto's which i have had 3 do the same. Fiat say this is normal, however with my last Punto Fiat replaced the entire engine, and ges what, after 5000 and out of warranty the noise was back. I have spoken to loads of people reagrding this problem, they all say the same Fiats do it.
