Dead Stilo 1.9 JTD MW

OK been having this problem for a little while, but she now almost completly dead.

Prblem ahs been in the mornings and evenings after the car has been sitting a while. Starts fine ticks over fine, but when you first start driving no turbo at all. Foot flat on the floor in 1st Gear revs slowly go up, get to about 3500 revs and 10 mph and the turbo kicks back in and then it's fine. Until last thursday evening. Got in the car do the norm turbo kicked back in. Got to some lights (20 yards down the road) no turbo again Again loads of smoke foot flat down turbo kicks in, take my foot off the accelerator and brake slightly foot back on the gas no power no turbo loads of smoke and between 2 and 3k revs load tapping noise.

Friday couldn't drive it at all no revs no power nothing had to get it recovered back to the dealers.

Ok so it's back at the dealers and they now say it is due to a massive leak on the intercooler. Telling me it sounds bad but all the noise and smoke is not doing any harm. Could this be the case or someting more serious.

This is exactly what happened on mine (and many others). yes, split intercooler hose. Cost just under £200 all in. Are you getting a whooshing noise?

Hi Bozzy thanks for the reply.

No, no whoosing noise just a really loud tapping, like if tappets need doing but a 100 times worse and only between 2k and 3k. But then may be a woosing noise just not able to hear it over the noise of the engine

That tapping sound like a pulley wheel (I had that problem too). The whoosing depends on the size of the split, you will know immediately if replacing the hose is the problem, the black smoke stops and the turbo comes back into play. Life's like this with the JTD and god how I miss it.

Let us know how you get on.

Re: Dead Stilo 1.9 JTD MW

Sounds like an air intake hose collapsing, or air filter collapsing. Could also be EGR valve sticking open which lets turbo boost pressure pass straight down exhaust, and lets exhaust gases into intake manifold. Loud rattling will be heavy diesel knock due to a lack of air getting into cylinders.

So the garage have just phoned me and said they have checked everything out and they are getting fault codes from the mass air flow meter. Could cause the problem. I have asked them if they have checked everything else and they say it is with out a doubt that that is causing the problem.

I thought they'd found a massive leak in the intercooler ducting (as Bozzy suggested).

MAF is dead easy to check. Disconnect it (only takes a minute) and if the engine runs a lot better than that's most likely your problem.

Re: Dead Stilo 1.9 JTD MW

No sorry they hadn't found a leak, they just thought that was what it was through my explination of what was happening. Just had another call def the mass air flow meter. Should be ready tomorrow so fingers crossed.
